Me too haha, mine was 32k when I bought it. 62k now
I hate putting extra miles on mine but it is reasuring to know how good the engines actually are.
I saw a Red GTI at Castle Combe's in April with 132K on the clock
You have a sweet looking ride, i wonder if you can help me with some questions.
Whats the ride height on your polo? Im looking at the weitec kit you have and want to know what the ride quality is like? is it bumpy or hard? whats it like when you go over bumps and speed bumps?

Heya dude,thankyou very much .
Ive lowered mine about 40-45mm lower than the standard GTI height. So not too low but im not really into all that. The Weitecs are a decent quality setup to be honest.I knew buying coilovers would make it alot more of a stiffer ride than the OE shocks and springs but i was prepared for that. The height im running them it's not too bad.Obviously stiffer than normal but i wouldn't say it's "crashy" which ive found when going in friends cars etc.I take speed bumps pretty slow so they feel fine,i only get annoyed when i drive down a really crappy road thats got loads of potholes in.But then it does have it's advantages,it looks alot better and i can take corners probably a third faster than i used to the handling improves alot and the Hicon GT's handl it well.I like driving through the country lanes so loads of bends etc and they're fine.
Yeah roads with loads of potholes or bad surfaces are the worst when driving on coilovers but 95% of the time they are fine. The handling improvements are what impressed me because in my opinion the standard set up was very poor and felt awful in the corners. Coilovers are certainly the best choice, good combination of great handling and awesome looks.
Thanks for all the info mate. I think I have made my mind up now. I think Im going to get the same as what you have, the weitec hicon gt's. I was thinking of the H&R 40/40 and 60/40 kit. With all your comments regarding the height and comfort, im prepeared to loose a little comfort, but most of all want the better handling and ride height to be alot lower. The gaps with 16's on standard suspension look really funny.
With the H&R kit you cant adjust the ride height, they are fixed positions. So I suppose if I bought that kit and I didnt like the height it would have been money down the drain.
One other question is, when fitting a coilover kit do I need to get front camber bolts?? I have read somewhere I might need these, is that true? and what are they for?

I was in the same boat as yourself dude.Ideally id probably still prefer the simplicity of an uprated shock/spring setup (i wanted the H&R kit too). But saying that im very happy with the Weitecs.I didn't need camber bolts for the front.I had the camber and full four wheel alignment carried out after i had them fitted,id definately reccomend this to yourself too.I hope you're not disapointed with the kit, best part is you can get the exact ride height you want, play around with different heights etc.The Weitecs are very anti seize too so you havent got to worry about the dreaded seizing stories and you've got KW quality too .
alanjwong wrote:Do you know if there is any maintenance I need to do after having coilovers fitted? for say like after 12 months and so on?
When you had yours fitted was the camber a lot out?
Can you also put a few photos up of what yours look like regarding the height, so I can see what it looks like on yours?
Cheers
There photo's of it in my thread dude just have a flick through. The camber was out a fair bit,you can adjust it by eye but this is by no means good enough so again id definately get it in for full four wheel alignment.
As for seizing you havent got to worry so much with Weitecs/KW's as the threaded struts and the adjustable collars are completely different materials not like cheaper brands that use two steel collars that lock together. They have a tough Nylon collar that naturally dosen't bond to steel and a small grub screw to stop it from vibrating out of position,i did put a nice amount of copper grease on the thread to protect it from the elements haha even though they are zinc plated it helps when you want to adjust them as the grease just wipes off and so does all the grit etc that sticks to it .
What Bradley said is spot on, keep them well greased and you will be fine. I put tape on my threads as well to stop any dirt sticking to the grease, just a little bit of extra protection.
Weitecs are really good Quality though so you wont have any problems with ceasings, its the JOM variants that need extra attention because they are produced from cheaper materials.
What kind of tape do you use on the threads? I have finally decided to get the weitec hicon GT's. I have been trying to make up my mind for months, Alex can tell you all about that.
It looks like the benefits of having coilovers out weighs the sport and spring kit for me in my case. i dont wanna get a kit that doesnt provide the ride height I want. And if I wanna have them lifted or lowered more I can. The only compromise is how comfortable it is.

You can just use PVC plumbing tape or something waterproof like that.
Could you refer to PM'ing now as ive got almost a page on suspension questions now dude lol. That isn't ment to be rude just id rather PM to keep this thread clear from off topic discussions.
