New to Polo ownership HELP!

Post by nicksyb »

Hi there

I picked up my first ever VW Polo yesterday and have been driving it a bit today. I have a few questions in regards to noises etc.

Please note I am a girl and I speak in girly language so please bare with me :D

My new car is an N reg 1995 Polo L 1300cc. In very good shape or so it looks like from the outside.

When driving and hitting the high end of 1st and 2nd gear there is a major rumble from the exhaust at the back, you can't miss the sound if your sitting inside the car. I think it may just need some attention on the exhaust but I have no idea.

Also when driving the engine sounds like a tank, or sort of like a diesal engine but it shouldn't be as its a petrol engine. This is only from the inside of the car not outside.

As I said I have never driven a VW before so the engine sound could be okay or it could be about to blow up who knows.

Anyone any idea? :D

Sounds like it needs a good service, I think the rumble might be your exhaust clamp or hanger. Mine did this and it failed MOT recently for having an excessivly corroded exhaust clamp.

Thank you for the reply I got the garage to have a look over it today and they agreed it does need a service.

the exhaust had two small holes in it which they filled in and the silencer has gone (explains the noise) the back break shoe needs cleaning and I need two new tyres on the back.

So not too bad then, now the decision they have given me is to have it MOT'd on monday and see what is wrong then have it serviced in one go or to just have it serviced then in August when MOT runs out just see what happens then.

Choices choices.

It was decided that the silencer wasn't a huge problem and I was to just turn up my music

Hey there, welcome to the forum! :D

Sounds like you've got a nice little motor, personally i'd just get it serviced & leave the MOT, as you've still got a few months to run on it. The early 6n Polo's with the 1.3 engine are tough old things too! (what i had)

my 1.0 can sound a little rough when giving it a boot-full. I prefer to think of it as the sheer brutality of all that power rather than a buggered engine :P . But seriously, ive been in allot of noisy polos, and all of them are still running sweet as a nut. :)
