Rusting on GTI

Post by Verity »

so ive had a little search and found a few bits and bobs on rusting.

but was just wondering Where have people found Rusting on their GTIs

i know most of the bodywork is galvanised but not everything is.
I was just wondering as Ive got a bit of rusting on my rear O/S door sill.

...well i say a bit. its not quite as bad as it looks. as it was sanded down the other day and most of that is surface rust. im jst in the process of treating it

That looks like it's been worn over time, the paints been removed then it's rusted.. Good thing to get it treated!

Mines rusting in a very small spot in-between the sill and bodywork on the rear quater. Once again it looks like where it's rubbed or paint has been removed somehow and rusted. Same goes for a small spot on the front of my bonnet, I think it's rubbed on the underside of the very front and the rst has crept up over time. All small fixes, but paintwork isn't my forte and I have other concerns before these get fixed!

I think your right Mr.P i wish i had a picture of before it was sanded down.
the paint had bubbled up loads. big bubbles and bumps. i guess maybe the paint cracked and water got in and made it rust and made the paint bubble

we sanded it back and it had gone further under the paint (where it hadnt yet bubbled up)
so we had to sand back loads to make sure we got all the rust before it spread
im dreading painting it....its on the inside of the door which i guess isnt to visible. but when the door it shut you can still see a little bit of the sill at the top where its sanded. arrgghhh

I have got a small bubble on my rear spoiler which is about 4mm diameter but apart from that everything else is fine.
I think one of the most common area's for rusting is the sills but to be honest you dont see many GTI's with rust on them, I think there will be more and more cases as they get older though.

My spoiler is covered in little bubbles, common fault on all VW's apparently, but being plastic it's not rust, just s**t paint!

My polo's fine. Never expect to see any rust due to the galvanised crack.

Bet I've just jinx myself though.

Everything is fixable remember :) that's the great thing about cars!

I think Nigelelliot has some rust issues on his sills so your not alone, not a problem though it can be fixed so dont worry about it!

i hope i can fix it. im a little paranoid now! and checking it all over the place for the slightest of signs

EDIT: Spent 4 hour this morning applying rust remover stuff. then went to work for my crappy 3 hour shift (leaving the remover on) and the rust has come back with vengence!!! seriously! its like its laughing at me!
i think its time to get the big boys out and start some drill sanding

As Ben said above I've got a few little rust patches around the sills. I'm not at home right now but I'll try and get some pictures up soon on my thread. Got a few updates to post so I'll upload them with them :)
