Rear view mirror help

Post by Dom_ »

It appears that a previous owner of my car had fitted a Golf rear view mirror, one of the autodim/rain sensing ones, although hadn't wired any of it up..And earlier, in a moment of madness trying to take just the mirror off, I pulled the whole thing off :(

This is what I have at the moment, from left to right (or top to bottom lol)
Metal base that sticks to the windscreen?
Strange gauze like material
Whats left of the rain sensor

Luckily I found a guide some guy in the US did on replacing these mirrors on a Mk4 Golf, this is what it should look like:

Hopefully I will be able to source the two bits of trim to go around the base :)

Now hopefully, this is where someone can help me, I need to know what is best to remove the old glue from the rain sensor (may aswell use it as something to put more bonding on) and the windscreen itself. Also what is best to then stick the metal base and sensor back to the windscreen like so, I still have the black circle on the windscreen to stick it to:

Sorry if I've not been very clear

Is it me or have you got no wiring at all on your rain sensor?

Seeing as the mount has come off, your best option is to go to your local autoglass garage and get them to stick the mount back on for you with the proper bonding agent. Its not something that you can do easily, unless you have a product such as tiger seal.

Yeah the wiring for the rain sensor has been snipped right where it comes out from the sensor, and again where it goes into the mirror :( shame really, as I imagine these mirrors aren't that cheap :?

Mirros about £150 new rain sensor is about £100 then theres all the wiring and custom relay to fit

Mine cost about £250 all in with all the wiring and then a new rain sensor windscreen on top! lol

Jebus! Wonder why whoever did it went and chopped it all up :( Is there a way of telling if I have a rain-sensing windscreen? There's still a black circular bit on the windscreen

There will be a hole for the sensor to see through. If the black circle is still there, then its a normal windscreen

Its rather odd they changed the mirror, considering its not in any way wired in, so its pointless!

Well, it's not a complete circle...it does have a whole in it, like an O

I'm sure autoglass or whoever would still be able to stick it on properly? :(

And yeah, it's a nice mirror, but getting it just to cut out the wiring is pretty strange!

Don't have a photo to hand, should of taken one earlier when I was fiddling about. I do have one where you can just make it out, there's still some of the old glue/bonding left on there

No thats the wrong screen. Someone has scraped that middle hole out. The black ring should be about 3mm wide and bigger than the whole rain sensor

Ahh fair enough. Hopefully I can just get it stuck on and find the two bits of trim for it, then I'm happy!
