Tuning GTi Cams etc

Post by onq »

Need some gelp and pointed in the right direction.

I was going to do the 1.8t conversion but due to the massive cost and pain in the butt i decided against it. So im gonna have the engine overhauled, stripped and basically made new but whilst i do this im gonna do a little light tuning.

What tuning options should i do whilst the engine is out, cams, forged, pistons etc

The cheapest way to get more power from this engine would be a Supercharger install rather than overhauling the entire engine. Its a crazy amount of work to strip the engine and rebuild it with uprated parts and you wont see a huge power gain either without the use of a Turbo or Supercharger.

Cams are the cheapest option to begin with

With the GTI having VVT its pretty expensive for performance camshafts.

Intake Cam 256 duration - £346.04
Exhaust Cam (choice of either 244 or 252 duration) - £318.68

Labour to fit @ 6hours - £352.50.
Custom-Code phase 2 Re-Map software, this comes in at £281.75 inc VAT.
Plus £10-15 for a new rocker cover gasket

Basically its £1300 + for the job with figures of 160bhp +

Best mods would probably be a Custom Intake system from the foglight directly into the throttle body, Race 4-2-1 manifold (heatwrapped), Fully Heatwrapped Stainless Steel exhaust system, Schrick 256 Competition Cams, Supercharger & Custom Code Re-map - Potential of 240bhp+

The standard internal probably wont cope with anything over 190bhp and the gearbox wont either.
Alot of work & money my freind, it would be cheaper and more beneficial to go for a 1.8T conversion!

Good advice there.

A G40 conversion is an awesome conversion as well. Only seen it done a few times but boy do they fly! IMO thats the engine the gti should have come with as factory but a more updated version with some comforts and saftey.

Yeah G40 conversion would be a good option too and much cheaper.
If you want more in depth info about Supercharging or Turbocharging your Polo then its best to go on Club Lupo because alot of people have done it to their GTI's on there, some people even supercharge the 1.4 Sport Lupo's too :)
