Dead Polo....Any ideas?

Post by cjwardy »

Ok, so I haven't been on here in a long while.

I've been very busy over the last few months and so the Polo wasn't used in approx 3months.

Went to start it the other day & unsuprisingly it had a flat battery.

On went the jump leads & up she fired. Took her for a spin down the motorway & back...good hour or so drive to get the battery charged up. Got home, turned her off, then went to start back up....battery had died.

So off I go to Halfords....next day the new battery is in & fitted. All is fine until.....

Start the car....idles fine. Go to move away & she nearly dies. Rev the engine & the revs die every time. Just has no go in it at all. Can't move it 1 metre. Foot to the floor and she won't rev aboce 2.5k. Get vag com on it & seems to be the throttle. Send it off to be repaired, but no faults found at all.

I'm at a loss as to what this could be. Is the ECU fooobared? I'm worried this is gonna be an expensive repair job.

Has anyone suffered anything similar that could help?

Thanks guuys

What exactly did it say when you Vagcom'd it?
It does sound like maybe a throttle or fueling problem

That's what I thought- throttle.

VAG COM wasn't recognising the throttle, but that was about all it was saying.

Fuel could be a route to next look down. I'm at a loss otherwise

Long time no speak CJ hope you're well. I'm not longer a GTI owner as of August. :( Sorry to hear about the polo problems... will keep an eye on this thread, see what Alex comes back with codes wise

P1558 Throttle valve drive fault in electrical circuit - you should have an EPC light for this. Resolution is to check the throttle valve control

P1579 Throttle valve control part adaptation not started - erase fault code and run Throttle body alignment (TBA). Otherwise check throttle vale control

P1564 Throttle valve control part low voltage in basic setting - check battery voltage and charge if necessary. otherwise erase fault code and run TBA as previous.

Basically its all pointing to a problematic throttle body. A couple of options:

Clean all the contacts that plug into the throttle body
Erase fault codes and run TBA program (info on ross-tech.com for free)
Clean throttle body and valve throughly with carb/injection cleaner

If this doesnt work, you will need to look into a new throttle body as this is where the problem lies.

All things point to throttle body as you say Alex.

Was sent away to be reconditioned, but they found 0 faults with it. Going to give it a real big clean up & check all the plugs thouroughly once more. Really baffling me this one.

Joe, how are you? I'm not too bad thanks. Had few personal problems so not been around for a long while, so sorry for not getting in touch.

What have you moved onto now?

Hope the GTI went to a good home.

Make sure you run a TBA after its cleaned - this can make all the difference.

If it still doesnt work, you are looking at a wiring fault (possible earth) or ECU problems.

Sorry to hear that Chris, i'm now driving a Leon Cupra R. Very very quick have had it for about 2 months now- great car but somehow hasen't got the same spark my polo did...

I looked through my codes and sounded to me like T.B issue. I will check when i'm in from work as i may still have a spare GTI throttle body lying about which you are more than welcome to have if need be.

Chris, I've still got my Throttle Body. Hows your diagnosis going? If you want, drop us your address and i'll send you out my T.b which you can have whether it works or not.
