I agree with most of what you are saying but the torque of a diesel, although far superior to n/a petrol engine, comes in early and drops off early too. In a drag race you'd be in the high end of the rev range so a petrol with similar peak power would be a good match for diesel car.

Don't get me wrong, I have huge respect for turbo diesel cars and they would prevail in most situations because of their flexibility but from a standing start the combination of short torque band and long gearing a petrol that is kept on the boil will keep the diesel in check.

That is a very fair point and I agree with you completely.
In a drag race situation a N/A Petrol would prevail or certainly be a match for a TDI provided they had similar performance levels.
The Petrol car would also have better traction off the line and a smoother power delivery.

Diesels tend to run out of puff when they approach 100mph where as a lot of N/A Petrol cars just keep going especially if they have VVT.

I do have great respect for TDI's also particularly for their performance & fuel economy but I don’t think I will ever swap the sweet sound of a high reving petrol engine for the heavy knocking diesel engine :)

Performance wise, diesels will be better 95% of the times but like you I wouldn't want to replace my high revving petrol for a turbo diesel, I currently drive an EP3 Civic Type R so doesn't get much more high revving with no torque lol. My fiance has my old 9n but we'd love to replace with a turbo diesel next, something like a BMW 120d. Remapped, they're about 220bhp with million nm.

Civic Type R 8) Quality! Much prefer the EP3 to the newer FN2 model.
Those VTEC engines are probably one of the best N/A engines every made if not the best
Iye those 1 series 2.0 TDI's are very quick machines, look really smart too and absolutely fly as standard let alone re-mapped.

If I was to get a hatchback diesel it would be between the 120D and the Ibiza Cupra PD160 :D

my cousin had a supercharged ep3 type r i loved it! he then moved onto a 05 sti 400 bhp thing could beat alot of cars r8's, xkr's, ferrari 360 the agression on that car was insane! i do agree but my tdi remapped is a completely different car fourth gear 110 is easy had a little go with my mates 9n 1.4 100 when i was standard i would pull a little more than him but after remapped i would p*** all over him for fun :D i dont think the car is as economical its the same or a little worse better on the motorway though 70mph i can get close to 50 mpg sometimes!

Cheers guys, yeah I do prefer the EP3 to FN2 and thats not just because I've got one. I wanted an Mk5 Golf GTi but they were still fetching a couple of grand more than a 1 year old EP3 so I went with that. I've always wanted a CTR anyway but was a bit sceptical about going from German to Jap. I still think there are many things the German cars are much better at but for driver thrill and enjoyment I prefer the Type R.

Dan, what was your brother's name on forums? Presumably he was on a forum. I've sat in a 1.4 100bhp but never the diesel equivalent. I've driven a 9n Polo GT (1.9 pd 130 I think) and that had decent punch.

Awesome, sounds exactly like what you're supposed to do with an EP3, all the right upgrades from all the right names. Yeah I'm on the CTRO forum and TRO. I'm also on mcr-vtec too but thats just a Manchester thing. I'm not on them all the time though lol. You should race your mate's Cooper from a rolling start, he'll be toast.

Awesome!! I don't think I've posted a pic of my EP3 here but it is grey but without most of the mods.
