How much were the top mounts? I need to change my shocks this weekend and might as well change them too.
Worked out about £19.50 inc vat for each top mount (x2 are needed), and about £13.00 inc vat for each bearing. Worked out roughly £65 (give or take a few quid) in total..

I was told by VW that the bearings aren't usually changed, but for £26 I thought why not.. VW also told me that the rear bushes on the shocks are lifetime and that their particular branch had never replaced or sold any, so I opted out. The rear ones worked about about £15 each side (x4 in total) but are special order.

Mine were the original top mounts and bearings, and being on 115k I thought it was best to change them, even though mine are fine, well seem it.

Well, I was going with something along those lines, but not rally, more racing. But I am put off by them being 15x7 with skinny tyres.. I really want some 16x7.5 (up to 8.5j) with some 195/40 tyres.. Some have just come up that used to be on one of my favourite 6n2's.. The wheels shouldn't work but they really do.. I'm a little in limbo now on what to do...

You will probably have trouble with the rear bump stops rich - they often cause problems due to their design.

Its possible you will have to reuse the ones from your current struts

Bump stops? In what respect? as in these are to long so they sit on the bump stops???

Oh.. And I've just confirmed some new wheels..

16x7.5 with 195/40/16 tyres...

These are an unusual choice/colour combo, but have been seen on one of the nicest 6n2's ever...

Points for the winner...

Re: MrP's GTI - Scrubbing - Archwork needed

Post by MrP »

Got them all fitted, copper greased up for the winter so they should hopefully last...

I have major scrubbing issues.. All down to the circled bit where the bumper meets the arch, I think I'm going to have to do some major fabrication.. Cut the section back, remove the fixing and relocate it further back..

Good luck with that dude! that's the reason why it's pointless getting the front arches rolled on the 6N2.

Nope... I want stance... It will still be drivable, I don't want any scrubbing issues at all!!

My car isn't that low and it still scrubs due to the wheel size, if I'm doing this I'm doing it properly!!

16's can look awesome on a 6N2 if done right, and by your picture the wheels suit it!

I tried a 16x7.5j Keskin KT1 on my GTi and it couldn't move it was ridiculous.

Can wait to see what you come up with Rich.

Just bought some Eibach camber bolts so I can fine tune the front camber properly!

Image

Also got some of these, Eibach 15mm, hubcentric with longer bolts.. I ideally want some which bolt to the hub first, but these will do..

Re: MrP's GTI - Weekend of fail

'Fail Weekend'

Tried to roll my arches and lower my car to get some stance... And had nothing but issues.

Firstly, on the front, there is a integral clip where the liner fastens to.. When rolled it has caused ripples in the arch... This has happens on both sides.. I tried cutting and grinding back the clip to become flush with the rest of the underside.. It still happened....

The said clip:

The Result:

Now for the rears, it turns out a previous owner has attempted rolling the arches by cutting various slots on the underside of the arch and bending each one in individually, on a quick attempt to roll this caused loads of ripples on the outside of the arch in the same place each inner cut has been made... I'm fairly sure these will need to be repaired at a body shop.. I didn't even touch the other rear arch..

As a result I'm now looking out for some replacement front wings.. These are GTi specific so hard to come across.. But looking on the forum and ebay etc, when they do pop up they are only like £15 each.. There are loads for sale but no silver ones..

I'm on the lookout for a good body shop in and around Sheffield to fix the rear arches, and I mean roll the rears, not flair and repair any of the outside of paint damage and/or ripples. I'm thinking £250 for the rears, or is that being optimistic? If you know any good body shops let me know!

The fronts don't scrub any more but I can't go much lower, the passenger chassis sits on the front ARB and knocks like hell and the drivers side driveshaft knocks against the chassis! Until my arches are perfect it'll stay as it is, chassis won't get notched until then. I put the spacers on the rear and they wheels sit perfect, but scrub like hell.. They have been removed for the time being.. Anybody want a pair of Eibach 15mm Hubcentrics with longer bolts? £50 (that is half price!)

So my search for stance is on hold at the moment..

The gutting thing is that we did a few cars this weekend and mine was the only one which turned out like this. I think this is a prime example of what can go wrong with arch rolling if not done by a professional insured body shop. But, on the upside it only cost me £20 in total for the renting of the roller, and I've learnt a very important lesson and how to arch roll, I understand why companies like Archemeny and Bandedsteels can't guarantee their work.. It's not all down to the technique, it's also the condition of the arches being rolled.
