Not sure about the Hubs but I know the Driveshafts are specific to the GTI.
I have been told they are not available for VW anymore and rather than have them replaced they need to be repaired & re-fitted. I'm not sure how true that is but hopefully Alex can clarify that

I presume you can still get hold of the CV joints from VW?

Yeah mate the CV joints are still available, I just had my o/s one replaced the other week.
The CV joints are around £35-40 which isnt too bad but my local garage said the driveshafts just are not available and unfortunately they are unique to the GTI.

Re: Driveshafts and hubs - Are they GTi Specific?
Driveshafts are unique to the GTI due to the EDL feature of the gearbox. CVs are also specific due to the bore of the driveshaft entry being larger.
As for being available from VW, they should still be available

Hopefully they are still available but when my local garage checked with VW they said they were not available anymore.
Mine will probably need changing at some point so I hope that they can be still purchased

Well, my car is making a wub wub wub wub wub kinda sound, it's probably a wheel bearing, but could be the CV joint.. I might try and get some used items and swap them over for the time being.
Anyone know the price of new wheel bearings and DV joints from VW? I'm guessing muchos $$$$$$

Re: Driveshafts and hubs - Are they GTi Specific?
wheel bearings howl when they fail. CV joints knock on corners and under harsh acceleration
CV boot kit is 15 quid, as for the joints expect £70+ if not a great deal more, and wheel bearings about £40 a side

Hence why I'm buying used!alexperkins wrote:wheel bearings howl when they fail. CV joints knock on corners and under harsh acceleration

It's coming from the o/s wheel area so 100% not gearbox (what every one thinks when they hear a suspect noise!), and I noticed the wheel is a tad slack with play.. When I changed my wheels the noise almost went away, but it's come back now since I lost a wheel weight which is probably related!

Dont go with used wheel bearings - well actually you cant go for used wheel bearings. They shatter when they are removed from the hub lol
Plus for the cost of them, if its failing you might as well replace it, as otherwise youll end up replacing the hub aswell which just isnt worth the hassle

Re: Driveshafts and hubs - Are they GTi Specific?
Oh, sorry, my bad, I meant driveshafts.. I'm gonna get some complete units, replace the bearings, build up some new brakes (280mm), whisbones, bushes the lot and do it all in one go, that way my car won't be off the road for too long!alexperkins wrote:Dont go with used wheel bearings - well actually you cant go for used wheel bearings.
