GTi 1.6 16v metal/alloy air intake?
Got the standard procedure BMC induction kit on my 6n2 gti, but its just connected to the standard air feed. Ive seen people ripping this out and fitting some better ducting but just wondering if anyone here has put in a metal/alloy cold air feed? Seen some going on elsewhere think they look real smart and fancy giving it a go
Cheers

I am kind of in the process of making one at the moment but they are a custom job and not something you can buy off the shelf.
You will need some Aluminium or Stainless Steel piping with a 70mm diameter and if your feeding the BMC from the standard airfeed like myself then your going to need some angled pieces of pipework too.
The pieces look best when welded together so its quite a big job in all fairness.

Your going to need various different pieces so check out the links above.
Cheapest Aluminium pipes I can source are from Hong Kong

Yeah thought as much, my mate has a lupo gti so same engine and hes got a custom alloy air feed it looks really good. What sort of lengths and bends have you gone for? And Im sure you could fit them together with silicon hoses etc?

I'm wanting to do this too.
I'm planning on relocating the charcoal canister, and using the o/s fog light as a ram air feed..
I need to make some measurements so i'll let people know when I do.
I reckon the noise difference would be unreal.

Yeah the o/s foglight has been used by quite a few people in the past (mainly people with the 1.8T conversion) but as Alex quite rightly points out it isnt really that pratical and you do stand a good chance of getting water into the throttle body.
Plus it does slightly put a dent in the image of the car.
If your looking to build a track monster then go for it but I wouldnt want to have that air feed location on a wet & windy day, going through large puddles etc
Stainless Steel and Aluminium intakes do look really good though but I think the standard air feed location is still pretty effective and offers good air flow. Another option would be to remove the o/s indicator unit if your just using it in sunny weather on a track, and then stick in back in for the drive home (only a 5 minute job)

I was worried about water intake.. There is literally nowhere else other than the original position for it to feed to, well on the O/S anyway, passenger side there are loads..

Here is another Option dude

Re: GTi 1.6 16v metal/alloy air intake?
Where does that go out to? Isn't the Aircon/rad in the way?
It's a bit close to the exhaust manifold is it not?

Re: GTi 1.6 16v metal/alloy air intake?
You can squeeze it past the radiator dude but I imagine that's only possible with flexible ducting.
Its fairly close to the manifold but if you keep the heat shield on there I cant see it being a problem.
If you fit a more free flowing manifold your best heat wrapping it anyway for better performance so I dont think you will have any issues.
Downside to having the air feed here is again possible water problems from puddles and when its raining.
Its a good position really though and far safer than the o/s foglight option.

K&N Typoon, done.......
Paint strip the tubing as its powder coated and polish it up or leave it as it is.............
Best 250 quid i have ever spent. And it will fit and work properly.

Typhoon is a good system and looks class too
Problem is the majority of people on here have the BMC like myself so we need to make an alloy air feed to make it look bling bling

I'm not a fan of the Typhoon.. I know it's functional, but it doesn't look right.. It makes the engine bay looking like it's missing something!

They are a nice piece of kit and it is really well made (better than the BMC) but I agree it does look a little strange.
Leaves the right hand side of the engine bay looking a bit bare. I wouldnt mind trialling one to see how they compare to the BMC but unfortunately they cost £200+

I bet they work so much better regarding heat soak and I bet they sound immense, it's just the looks I don't like...6N2 GTI 00 wrote:They are a nice piece of kit and it is really well made (better than the BMC) but I agree it does look a little strange.

Craig (TrottaGTi) said its fairly quiet, refined and not too loud which is pretty similar to the CDA.MrP wrote:I bet they work so much better regarding heat soak and I bet they sound immense, it's just the looks I don't like...
It does have a great location for cold air and I think it looks cool but I think i'll stick to my BMC for now
