Brake upgrade What set up?

Hi guys,

Next to get some new disks and pads. Are there any other vw or audi set up i could use???

9n GT?

If you can, I'd swap a 312mm setup of a Mk1 Audi TT. You'll need to find calipers and carriers and get some 312mm disks and pads. The pads and calipers themselves are the same as those in the stock 288mm setup, although getting a set of 312 caliper carriers on their own may prove a task...

Sorry forgot to add I have the gt set up already I like the idea of the tt set up though!!! :D

Expensive option though I think the tt maybe the most practical option. Its just a case of finding some carriers though.

The GT is your best bet, mine's a 1.4 Petrol Sport and it has the same brakes as standard, also the same as the mk4 GT Golf, compared my mates next to mine, always an option

As standard, sport models have a FSIII 256mm front setup with calipers carriers integral to the hub. Completely different to the 288mm setup.

was just thinking the same thing :lol:
but the hubs are changeable and its not just polo gt you have to look for in the scrappies accident damaged, fabias and ibizas are your friend

The OP has a GT, so has the correct hubs anyway :)

88rsr, have you done the swap yet? If so any idea how much the going rate for the hubs are? I've seen them going from anywhere from £40 to £80+ a side :? Might have to invest in some if I decide to go ahead with my big power 1.4 TDI project...

I did some research, and apparently, the hubs themselves are identical and have the same part numbers (on Sports anyway). It's the the wheel bearing/hub housing that's different. Is there any reason you couldn't re-use a hub on another housing once removed from your stock housing? Reason I ask is I've never seen used housings on their own, only with the hubs. Could work out cheaper if you asked for just the housings...

Think the housing is called the hub carrier, the big lump of cast metal that the bearings and all that good stuff sit in?

no bud our lasses is a GT so no need, but the mate had looked into it and at one point was offered the job lot (hub+carrier, caliper carriers, discs, pads, calipers, obviously bearings in there) 100 quid for the front pair its a case of dropping on them somewhere it just came at the wrong time for him i also dont know if the different calipers will need a different brake hose perhaps someone whos done it can advise, i reckon it would be very worthwhile on yours when you go for some high power obviously if your going for some track use etc

if you think about it the big power will still get you to the same speeds as before just quicker, you can still stop from 70 in a car with small brakes right? it just takes longer more heat produced blah blah blah lol, so although its a good idea and a thing i would peronally do, in my opinion its not "essential" to have massive brakes unless going for track use or you want to drive like an absolute bellend, sounds daft but if you actually think about it you'll understand what im getting at,

im a fan of bigger brakes because they take less effort, produce more braking force and look better filling a wheel, (ive even done it myself on the passat, 288-312s)
im just trying to say that thinking about it, its not a must if you're sensible when just say re-mapping a car

...yep im talking too much i'll shut it now, back on topic

most polos- gt/vrs/fr setups is an upgade but you need everything you can get from the donor
gt's or anyone with this setup, 312mm carriers etc are the next (straight forward) step

I'm completely with you on the you don't "need" bigger brakes, but then again, I believe you shouldn't up the power beyond a remap without sorting the brakes, suspension and tyres (a decent set of tyres are soooo under-rated). You'll be surpised at the amount of jokers out there that hike the power up significantly and don't even bother to use decent rubber. The stock 256mm setup is adequate if not great. Let's put it this way, I don't think I'd like the brakes on non-sport models. Drove an Ibiza 130 TDI with the 312mm setup and it was much more confidence inspiring.

You have PM btw regarding the auto windows (bad news I'm afraid).

Lol not a problems guys, My questions had been answered! Just to confirm with my current gt set up all i would need is the carriers and calipers and so on, nothing to do with the hubs lol?

You just need the carriers really, but they tend not to be sold seperately to the calipers. Aparts from that, a pair of 312mm discs (obviously) and some new pads. And your stock hubs, etc are fine :mrgreen:
