no 4th gear and loud wining sound like super charger

got in my car today the gearbox felt frozen and stiff.any way when changing into 4th there is no gear and its whining like a b***h.also the break pedal has lifted.its weird any ideas people

Is it whining with the clutch down?

dont think it is mate.but changing gear is very diff its so stiff.the break pedal felt like it had moved position.but ot sure if its related to the gearbox.there is a knocking noise as well but the high pitch wine is loud.my car is 84000 miles on first box i think

Sounds like your box has gone mate im afraid - try to drive it as little as possible and get it to a mechanic/gearbox specialist as soon as for an official verdict

Expect anything from 350 to 500 if the gearbox needs rebuilding plus labour

You won't get much if it has gearbox issues, so its not worth selling as the loss is often greater than the cost of fixing it

Couldnt agree more.
The GTI's simply are not selling at the moment and you dont stand a chance of selling one with a dodgy box unless your willing to let it go for under 1K.
