9n to 9n3 lights - which do i buy?

Post by chirag1988 »

hey guys, i've got a 9n and looking to fit the 9n3 lights, but just wanted to get some opinions if its ok to use non-oem parts for the 9n3 lights or best to go for original vw parts? seen a few on ebay and was wondering if anyone can shed some light on which are good or bad?

Hi there.

Normally I would say almost always go for OEM parts. I also have a 9n, fitted the 9n3 lights today, looks incredible, such a transformation, very happy with it. I however purchased some lights off a guy in club polo and assumed them to be VW OEM parts, turned out there are from "Auto Parts Depot", but look identical with just as high performance and finish, but I guess time will tell!

However, you must also bear in mind that the wiring to the 9n lights is different to the 9n3, and therefore you either need to be rather skilled at rewiring the socket, or buy an adapter. Ash (Member called K.I.T.T. on here) makes up a set of adapters for £35 and they're marvellous, made from VW parts and very well put together. Easily worth the spend in my opinion!

The thread for this is here: http://www.uk-polos.net/view ... 11&t=49011

Hope this helps!

yeah i saw that thread by KITT and once i get the 9n3 lights i'll definitely be buying the £35 adaptor off him! so many bits and bobs i've thought would be "easy" have turned out to be a nightmare and especially in this season when you get a few hours of good daylight, you just want things done and dusted!

How long did it take you to actually do the fitting then? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your lights? Finaly (i know its a lot of questions lol) which out of the links i've put up would you recommend me buying?

thanks for your help so far mate :D

Yeah I know, you leave things lying around and don't get done for ages! Had the clusters for almost 2months before I fitted them! You won't be disappointed mate, the look spectacular and transform the back end of the car. Much sharper.

I'm a novice, and by that I mean apart from installing my new Headunit when I replaced the original VW Cassette deck with a new system, I haven't done any real work on the car myself. But I just had a go, takes 5minutes to fit each cluster.

Pull back the carpet in the sidewall of the boot, and disconnect the clipped in plug from the look into the light unit.

unscrew (its got a tap on the end, no need for a scredriver!) then there are two clips on the further edge of the cluster, simply push entire cluster up gently and it should pop out! Give it a bit of a wiggle should come out with little problem.

I got a great deal with my lights, paid £60 inc delivery off a guy from clubpolo. Any of those on ebay mate would say get ones from the UK as you're more likely to get free postage! Pay anything up to 90quid for replica units,(pair) bit more for VW Ones but no noticable difference!

Good luck :D

FWIW, I paid about £70 for a pair off eBay. Made by Magneti Marelli, which is VAG OEM. This was three years ago though.

Ones direct from VW are about £54 a side IIRC.
