Freshly Refurbed BBS RXII - Sealant??

Post by funlovincriminal »

Just had my bbs' refurbed, I'm going to put them back together this week. Do i need to use a sealant between rim & centre?? If so what is best sealant to use.

The recommended is vauxhall oil sump gasket sealant, but a decent loctite gasket non silicone based sealant from halfords would do the job.

Looks like a nice job on the wheels :)
I would have gone for polished outer rims but they look cool regardless

If both parts are painted no sealant is needed

Only reason I ever used sealant was to fill the void and stop the polished rim from corroding behind the edge of the centre section - the sealant has never come out of mine since I did the guide - but as I've stated before I don't use a jet wash to clean the wheels

yes rim is painted too, I was going to polish rim, but not enough time in the day atm so just got them painted & it was cheap. So if you don't think sealent is req'd i'll give it a miss & just bolt them together tonight, they should go togeter ok as the refurber cleaned out threads on the rim.
Just got some michelin 195/50/15 winter tyres delivered just as snow disappears!!, will be getting them fitted on the g60's & some maxis 195/45/15's on the bbs' this week. I'm having a very expensive week, oil service is due too
The bbs' will be going on when weather gets better. I should be able to keep them in good condition now I have a set of winter wheels.

Be aware 195/50/15 will put your speedo out, and if you are lowered, will scrub the rear arch liners often to the point of burning through :(

Oh no, i’ve had a right mess on trying to find some winter tyres that will fit. I tried a few sizes on at my mates garage before I bought the tyres. They were ok at front at full lock, I thought the front was going to be the worst case for catching against liner when at full lock, We thought rear would be fine if front is ok .
Unfortunately they don’t do winter tyres in a 195/45/15, & I really need them if I want to use the car when there’s snow on the ground where I live. I dunno weather to give them a go if it’s worth it.

Sorted, well nearly, bolts need torquing upto 30nm, only had a 15nm torque wrench  , then tyres on next week ready for spring. I think gold bolts would have looked good, but never mind.

Also had the 195/50 michelin winter tyres fitted to the g60's today. Perfect day for it, had about half inch of snow earlier am well impressed, have to really push it hard to even spin the wheels. The tyres definately have the potential to rub at back, only happened once when i was out all day, going fast down a bumpy country lane. the 50 profile fills the arch a bit, it don't look as good but they will get me to work in snow.

Bolt Overtightened stripped thread from wheel :-(

Post by funlovincriminal »

Mate was round last night & helped to tighten up to 30nm, BUT was on last wheel & he set torque wrench to ft pound instead on NM, thus overtightening a couple of bolts & stripping thread from wheel & now they just spinning. Worst nightmare my fault, should have checked.
It there a way to fix this? gutted, 3 of wheels spot on, I'm kicking myself now, should of done em all myself

Easy to remove dude don't worry I stripped 4 and purchased new ones from alex,ya need a tool called a thread extractor, I can send you one if ya want along as I get it back lol....

Or a stud/bolt extractor, they work on opposite threads this pulling the bolt out....
