1.4 16v (75bhp) EPC and Engine light on...

Post by MrP »

Posting on behalf of my mate...

He's got a 2001 1.4 16v (75bhp) and has an intermittent fault for ages.

The EPC light comes on randomly, as does the engine management light. When the car is turned off and started again the EPC light disappears then will come back on again in a few miles.

I've VAGCOM scanned it and got this error on the insturments:
01314 - Engine Control Module
49-00 - No Communications

BUT.. when I try and scan the engine controller I receive 'can't sync baud' or something like that..

Well, either way.. Anyone know where to start looking? the car's had a recent MAP sensor, service etc so it's nothing obvious. We will be stripping the inlet side down to check for vacuum leaks and any split/arcing/bad wires or earth points. We have also been recommended to check relay 119?

Anyone got any thoughts?

01314 - Engine Control Module: No Communications

Possible Causes
CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module faulty
Fault(s) stored in Engine Control Module
Engine Control Module recently flashed or re-mapped

Possible Solutions
Check CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module
Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)
Usually Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) 125+ show the current Communication Status

As for cannot sync baud, change your Start Kbaud in the vagcom settings to 9600. That should fix that problem.

Thats an issue with the ECU most likely - I would take the plug off and give it a squirt with contact cleaner and refit.
