Re: Nigel's GTI - Gearbox has gone.. Hooray! :D
It kind of just went pop and then there was a very weird whining noise, sounds like a rally car! 2nd and 4th are stiff and 1st, 3rd and 5th are easy enough to get in and out of but the noise is ridiculous. Especially bad when I'm decelerating in gear, that's when I first noticed it. Just been popping it out of gear to preserve it as such when i'm slowing down. It'll be off the road now until it's fixed.
I'm not too bothered by it to be honest, I knew it would happen eventually anyway... When it's sorted it'll just be one less thing to worry about

Iv looked into the eBay boxes and rang them up to see what's what with them,
There much better than the oem ones, upgrade nearly every component and I might get one wen mine goes as mines sounding dodgy lol....
Or will you be getting yours repaired somewhere???

Sorry to hear about your Gearbox dude, lets hope you get it fixed & sorted ASAP.
Some people are more lucky than others when it comes to th gearboxes I guess, some get less than 40K miles and others ger 100+K which is weird. Ahwell hope you get the GTI back on the road soon mate

Sorry to here that dude
I was so annoyed when mine went. My 5th gear bearing went but i replaced all the needle roller bearings with Timkin ones which are supposedly stronger than the VW ones.
Re: Nigel's GTI - Gearbox has gone.. Hooray! :D
That Really really sucks! Sorry to hear it.
Least your looking at it positively. Good thing to tick off the list.
If you dont mind me asking, how many miles has it done since it was last replaced?

Cheers guys... Like I say, I knew it would happen eventually, pretty much all of us who own one of these cars knew it would so I'm not going to act like it's a huge surprise or anything
@Alex - the wheel bolts are now irrelevant
The main diff bearing, that's the main issue with these gearboxes right? because it's riveted or something?
*EDIT* Upon reversing it on the driveway, it's now stuck in reverse. That'll be a bit of a hassle when it comes time to take it to get it refurbed.

Good to see i am not alone in sunny ulster ! ,where do you hail from mate
Re: Nigel's GTI - Gearbox has gone.. Hooray! :D
I got an eBay box from a company called 1st Gear Transmissions.
They were really good but didnt offer a warranty as the car was lowered etc.
I drove nearly 150 mile to Kent to where they are based to have it fitted as mine was just about drivable.
When they stripped the box they found that it had 1.0 litre polo crown wheel and pinion.
They put a real GTI box back on it and it drives sweet now, and has been hassle free.
The gear stick is soooooooooo tight again now it feels brand new.
I know the warranty is an issue but i cant recommend these guys enough, really freindly and helpful.
Cost £500 all in, i paid £700 8 months before for the bodged up box .
