Yes it is the differential rivets, and often the 5 final drive bearing which is in fact high tensile nylon. Good old VW skimping on quality.

They were really good but didnt offer a warranty as the car was lowered etc.

I drove nearly 150 mile to Kent to where they are based to have it fitted as mine was just about drivable.

When they stripped the box they found that it had 1.0 litre polo crown wheel and pinion.

They put a real GTI box back on it and it drives sweet now, and has been hassle free.

The gear stick is soooooooooo tight again now it feels brand new.

I know the warranty is an issue but i cant recommend these guys enough, really freindly and helpful.

Cost £500 all in, i paid £700 8 months before for the bodged up box .
I've heard good reports about the ebay boxes too... the only problem is where I live. If I can get one delivered to me I could certainly find someone who'll fit it no problem though.

Been quoted about £400 for a full refurbishment with a 12 month warranty which is a good enough price mind you so I'll see how that goes.

eBay is definitely my second option though especially after hearing so many good reports :)

Steve, I was beginning to think I was the only one on here! I'm from Ballymena but I live up around Portstewart now.

What about yourself? :)

How does the box actually feel when its on its way out?
Does it still go in & out of gear ok, mine seems to be noiser than it used to be so I think it could be an early sign of it going however it still changes gear nicely and I dont have any problems putting it into gear when its cold etc.

Are you going for a straight forward rebuild Nigel or are you going to getting uprated?

Ben :)

Mine felt absolutely fine up until it started making that noise, then it got progressively stiffer going in and out of gear. It was actually stuck in reverse up until the other day after I moved it off the driveway to free up the brakes.

Mine's fine at the moment in terms of the gear shifting but there is a noise coming from the box which seems to be getting louder & louder.
I think I'm going to have to get it uprated before the cams go in, what kind of prices have you been quoted for the refurb Nigel?

Ben, Apologies for the massively late reply.

With regards to the refurb, i'm not sure if they'll use uprated parts or not. I'll have to ask the place doing it tomorrow when I get a chance and see if they can use stronger parts and bolts and whatever it is they need to do to make it stronger.

Price wise - I was given a very vague figure of between £120 and £300 depending on what needs done. No idea if that'll include labour or anything just yet. Will have to contact the place again tomorrow. I've basically just spent the last couple of weeks saving where I can so I'll have enough to cover the costs.

Good Stuff Nigel :)
Mine goes in tomorrow for the box transfer, I went for a recon box from 1st gear transmissions.

Have you changed the clutch as well?

I had a new clutch less than 6 months ago but I hope it's all good using the same one... I vaguely remember reading somewhere before that someone had issues with using an old(er) clutch with a freshly refurbished gearbox but that might just be my imagination running a bit wild.

should be fine mate if its only 6 months old, the majority of the time its not neccesary to change the clutch when having the box refurbed, its just whilst the box is out you might aswell change the clutch at the same time.
