mk5 clusters in mk4!! someone please tell me how!

where can i find a guide on how to wire up the mk 5 lites. cos this job is causing me a serious headache today cos i got the mk5 rear clusters today and can't blooby wire it up rite.

well I guest you should get the little plastic part holding the bulbs...and then you only need to put the right wires at the right position..

i bought the clusters straight from the VAG dealer, everything fits, i just need a wiring diagram really. cheers for the advice though and thats a nice little black polo there.

Jim, don't panic.

The LHD may be different than the RHD version, but here's how I did it (LHD)... After 1998 the electronics change and this guide won't work.

Passenger side (that's right side/driver side for you) means slicing off the two studs on the plug that goes into the lightbulb holder. That allows it to be fitted the wrong way round.

After that, switch numbers 4 and 5, which should be Green/Grey and Brown. So turn the plug around, and switch the wires.

On the left side you'll find these wires:

No1: Black & Red
No2: Black & White
No3: Black & Grey
No4: Black & Blue
No5: Brown

and you need to switch numbers one and two around. That's it.

Remove both taillights and their bulb holders so you are left with an easy access to the wiring. On the passengers side you will have to cut 2 wires, these are the ones in No1 & No2, they should be Black & Red and Black and white, these then have to be swap around. (Don't try pulling the wires out of the connector box it doesn't work!)

The new wiring sequence that you should end up with is this:
No1: Black & Red
No2: Black & White
No3: Black & Grey*
No4: Black & Blue*
No5: Brown*

*These ones remain in there original places

Don't put the lens in just yet!

On the Drives side, this is were it gets tricky, you will have to cut 4 wires.
This is because on both sides of the MK5 the little lugs on the top and bottom of the connectors point the same way, where as on the MK4 they point the opposite way, making the drivers side one, in effect, upside down.

This is the new wiring sequence:

No1: Black & Red
No2: Black & Green
No3: Black & Grey*
No4: Green & Grey
No5: Brown

*This is the only one that you don't cut, it also keeps you from loosing the connector if you do cut it, it doesn't matter!

Use a proper elecricians kit to crimp the wires together in males female connectors, DO NOT use connector blocks from Halfords at 50p each, the foglight and the ground need a higher ampage connection than these offer. They are only rated to 5-8amp the foglight needs 10amp - one melted connector or worse a fire!

Now check to make sure everything works.

Once you've done that its time to put the lenses into place. If you are buying new ones from VAG (£85 for everything) or sourcing parts from a scrapyard or breakers make sure you have everything you need before getting to this stage.

If you just bung the lenses in with the brandnew rubbers, they will stick out a mile even if you tighten it down as tight as you can, it won't do any good. Use the original rubbers off the back of the MK4 lights. They are quite a bit more compressed with age and as they are off your car already will seal even tighter. The difference between the lower edge of the lights and the body work should be the bare minimum now.

Now plug in your bulb holders, replace everything in the boot. Make sure all the lights work before heading out onto the road. And cruise around with your lights on all the time.

Ok this is for the people with 98 on cars, these are the different colours of wires.
(Don't take my word for it, check first as i did mine on a 97 Polo this is just sumising!)

Passenger side Std wire sequence:

Tail light: Grey & Red
Reverse: Black & Green
Brake: Black & Red
Indicator: Black & White
Earth: Brown


Drivers side Std wire sequence:

Tail light: Grey & Black
Fog light: Grey Green
Brake: Black & Red
Indicator: Black & White

Its the Brake lights and the Indicator that are the wrong way round, easy on the passenger side, but not sure if you have to flip the drivers side like on the 94-98.

its a bit long winded but gets the job done!! by the way - if u want them to fit flush properly u need to drill the bottom inner hole ('inner' as in nearest the boot opening) out to 15mm.
