Just got a '02 Polo 1.2 E as a First car for my Son. He is currently provisional so will use this to learn and then after passing, going solo

Couple of questions (probably more as we think of them)


The car has come with one key. How easy is it to get a second and have it programmed for the car. Would the E model have had remote central locking ?

It has a radio/cassette (beta ??) - There does seem to be tweeters, but are the rear speakers connected ? Again a E spec question I guess.


It would be useful if there is a copy of the 2002 brochure for the Polo online, also a general maintenance and repair guide - for trim etc.

The E model doesn't have remote locking. The keys themselves can be had off ebay and the like for decent prices, about £50 from VW I think. The expensive bit is having it cut and programmed to the immobiliser at the dealers, I'm getting it done and was quoted about £100 for labour! Daylight robbery since it involves very little actual work...

No rear speakers I'm afraid, but the front ones aren't really that bad. You could always fit some aftermarket ones into the original spaces if you need them.

Haynes do a pretty good manual for the Polo. Covers everything - mechanicals, trim, electrics, general checks etc. £12 on Amazon.

The E doesn't have remote central locking as said above, and in some (if not all models which are E spec) there is not even CL, never mind remote.

On the 3door E spec models, there are no speakers in the back and also no MOUNTS for speakers, just fake-speaker-grills. If you wanted to install speakers you'd have to build/have built some kind of frame to attach speaker to....but as said, the front standard speakers are decent quality to be honest. There are tweeters usually located in the pillars by the windscreen, and the standard speakers in the front doors.

I think we may keepp this pretty standard like it is now. Use it as a means to get the Test out of the way, a few more months after that before considering a change to something a little more "dynamic" after a year of no-claims.

Insurance is a nightmare, we've all been there! I don't know how many cars you have in the family including the polo, if it is 3 or more then I would strongly advise you checking out admiral multicar, they offer some great discounts and each cars policy is seperate, in other words your son could build his own no-claims whilst having a cheaper qoute than going to a company for insuring just the one car. These wheels came standard on a 1.2 "S" spec Polo we have.......but that is a 9n3. They may have been standard on the 9n 1.2 S spec too, and I'm sure than they were a non-expensive option for the "E" Model. I have a set for sale at the moment, they are good wheels, much nicer than the steelies my 1.2 9n "E" spec came with!
