Intermittent Starting

Post by Endi_GTI »

Hi guys,

Just wondered if you could shed any light on this small problem of mine. Basically sometimes the car will just keep on cranking and wont start. Then leave it a min with the key out and it will fire on the button as usual. I haven't really payed much attention to it but it has been doing it on and off for the past few weeks. However today i started it drove about a quarter of a mile and switched off, left for 2 mins tried to start and it would not go at all. Eventually after a lot of cranking it was trying to start on 2 cylinders then after a bit more 3 and after a bit of persuasion 4. Once it was running it was fine. Its like it is overfueling on start up.

Anyway took it to work and hooked it up to the Diagnostics. Completely forgot i had it  and gave these codes:
- 11833: Tank venting valve present
- 16500: Coolant Temp Sender present
- 17978: Engine Control Unit Blocked Intermittent
- 17935: Bank 1 Variable Valve Timing
- 18006: Oil Temp sender cam timing A05

Everyone at work reckons it is the coolant temp sensor (16500) which is firing off the other codes. I then cleared all the codes and drove it again. it came back up with:
- 16500: Coolant Temp Sender Present
- 17935: Bank 1 Variable Valve Timing
- 11833: Tank venting valve present

One of the guys said to block the tank valve charcoal filter, so i did this and it got rid of that fault. He said it will stop extra fuel vapour going back so reducing possible overfueling. Started fine a few times since this morning, however had one hick up and would not go again. I think i may have to replace the coolant temp sensor any way if it carries on and see if it fixes it. I will see in the morning if it starts better from cold. This could also explain why my fuel economy has been so poor recently.

Just wondered if anyone has had any similar problems with their GTI's? And if any more light could be shed on this problem?

Cheers for any help,

Matt

I wouldn't disconnect the charcoal canister -thats not the solution to the issue.

Replace the coolant sensor for sure, although Coolant Temp Sender present is an odd error.

The actual error code for 16500 is Coolant Temperature (G62): Implausible Signal, which means its definitely dead so time for a new one.

As for 11833 - can you check thats the right error code? Its not referencing against my VW manual

Thanks so much alex, thought you would be able to hep :)

I will check that code tomorrow as i am working. It seems to be behaving itself for now but will get it replaced any how.

Have you heard of this problem before on the GTIs?

Coolant sensors fail all the time

Ensure you replace it with a genuine VW item though or youll end up replacing it again in the future.

Plugged it all in at the weekend Alex and it wouldn't come up with that code again, so must have written it down wrong. At least it has not come up again :)

Got a new sensor on order :)

Hopefully solves it.

Thanks again mate
