HID for the 9n

Hi guys,

So after loving the extra light output/whiteness of replacement Xenon bulbs for the old Halogens, I've decided to go the next step at get an H.I.D. kit, as the extra light would be great plus I love the blue tinge of HIDs (not looking for chavvy blue sidelights or anything, just the HID package look).

Couple of questions, for fitting to my 9n,
Do I need a CanBus or Non-Canbus kit?
Does it need to be slim-line or standard?
What would you recommend, is 6k any more blue/white than the standard bulb?
I have the standard lenses in so reflector not projector, and I don't want to dazzle other drivers/attract unwanted Police attention. Also, I'd want a kit that works with my headlight adjustment switch so I can choose how high/low they are projected on the road in front of me.

Non-canbus. Slimline vs non-slimline will be referring to the ballasts. Slimline may be easier to install / hide, that's about it.

Personally, I'd try some decent bulbs like M-TEC H7 cosmos blue first and see what you think, before shelling out on a HID kit (yes, cosmos blue...but they look white).

My 2p (and strictly my opinion), reflector lenses + HID = fail. Even special H7R "reflector" builbs.

Yep I know what the slimline refers to, just didnt't know whether or not the 9n required slimeline ballast or not.

Given the fact I've already shelled out £35 for replacement bulbs....I think if I was to shell out again, I'd get an H.I.D. kit Ash..... I know what you mean and I see your argument for HID + Reflectors....... are the M-TEC H7 what you run in yours? If so, have you got a pic?

I've been meaning to get a set, but never managed to get round to it. I epically failed trying to get my stock sidelight bulbs out and haven't even tried to access the dipped beams. Diesel engine = extremely cramped engine bay, I think I may have to remove the bumper. Might forget about it for now and come up with some homebrew projector solution at some point.

But yeah to be fair they do look extremely similar to HID.....impressed to be fair!

Will definitely consider them..... with the 1.2 Petrol there's quite a bit of space to play with but I remember my mate who fitted the first replacement bulbs in my 9n said the sidelight bulbs were very fiddly to get out (should just be a sinmple pinch + twist).

Also, one of my headlights is fogged up, need to get that sorted/replaced. Its not condensation, it looks like road-salt has gone inside and put a misted-film on the inside of the lens.....not sure, I've tried polishing the outside of the lens and its definitely not that.... so I guess it's a bumper off job to see what I can do anyway!

Take the cap off the back and warm the front of the light gently, that should do the trick

Doesn't seem like condensation though, will try and get a pic up tomorrow but it looks like its got a film like its dirty from the inside....which made me think it was roadsalt. Would your method still work?

It probably is condensation. Mine did that (very slight) on the passengers side on a cold day. It's warmed up a bit recently and it's back to normal. But yeah, cap off + hairdyer should get rid of it!

Thought it was condensation at first but it's been like that since early December, and there have been a few spells of warmdry days where it's made no difference..... will give the hairdryer + cap off trick a go and see it it works, cheers! Will keep you posted.

Hid will get rid of condensation it did on mine.
I mounted my ballests on the outer top mount bolt. Yes slimline are what I have to fit under bonnet where I have pit them. H7r work well mine passed mot with them just needed adjusting

I've got HIDs in my dipped beams and fogs as well. Paid about £35 a set and it was much easier taking off the front bumper then removing the headlights and replacing the bulbs. It took me a best part of an afternoon, but then again I did it in December when it snowed heavily the day before with limited daylight hours lol. I've used the 8000K H7 bulbs which give a slight blue tint. The sidelights are just your standard 4-LED bulbs. Check it out below:
