Use two buckets, one for clean soapy water and one for rinsing. Buy a wash mitt (lambswool is best, microfibre if not) not a sponge and wash the car along the lines of the car. Wash and rinse from the top down, dry with a water blade and waffleweave/microfibre towel, polish with a good quality polish and finish with a wax.
Might also be worth claying it if it hasn't been done in a while.

Have a look on polishedbliss.co.uk for some proper in depth guides...

All depends on how much you want to get into it.

I'd say a good 2 bucket wash followed by a polish and wax will keep you happy. :-)

My post above shows what I've found over the years to be solid performers, maybe not "flavour of the month", but they work well and don't require a huge amount of effort.

Trust me, I've spent a lot of money on "boutique" polishes and waxes and still come back to the above products on daily drivers.

Regarding machine polishing, Porter Cable, Sonus Pads and Menzerna Polish are my weapons of choice!

I've got gold class shampoo, which is really good stuff. Just got some dodo juice BTBM which I'm going to try out next weekend.

Polish wise by hand I think you can't go wrong with autoglym super resin.

Wax I have collinite 436 and just got some Autoglym HD off eBay for £25.

At the end of the day mate you can spend hundreds on different bits and bobs.

I'd say get a couple buckets, wash mitt, shampoo and polish and see what results you get. If it's not enough add stuff to the routine.

Dodo Juice is really good stuff and isnt too expensive like other products :)

As Godderz said its a really expensive hobby but if you want your car to look at its very best then its worth putting in the hours. I'm happy with just a basic wash, polish and wax but if you want the best results then get yourself the right products and equipment :)

^^^^ agreed! DoDo Juice do some awesome stuff

A few good products IMO....

- Get grit guards with the buckets too!! You'll be suprised what gathers!
- Poor boys is also a good and not to expensive brand. Eg. PB Wheel Sealant
- Chemical Guys Fabric Clean is amazing stuff! And I love the smell. Smells like lemon meriungue pie!
- Stoners Invisible window cleaner is flawless
- Autofoam snow foams good! And I again love the smell! Lol

When drying just use a nice thick drying towel.
Drying blades have been proven to cause swirl marks.
And so can some drying towels if there not soft enough!
Never rub! Just lightly drag the towel over the paint work.
(it's a mistake I made once whilst being absent minded on paintwork that had just been corrected  )
