Millers 75W90 Gearbox Oil

Post by 6N2 GTI 00 »

I have been recommended to use the Millers 75W90 Gearbox oil in my GTI as apparently its one of the best if not the best oil on the market.
I was having a good chat with a bloke about car & gear oils and he is fully aware of the gearbox problems associared with the Polo GTI's.

I've got the VW stuff in there at the moment but apparently this stuff is top class and offers more protection than the VW gear oil.
The Millers Gear Oil is also Fully Synthetic and I think (not 100% sure) the VW gear Oil is Semi-Synthetic.

I have heard the VW stuff has special additives but that doesn’t necessarily means it’s the best suited oil for the box.
What is everybody else using at the moment?

Sounds interesting Ben. I have the VW stuff at the moment. When i was pumping it in i thought that it was really pissy for gear box oil. The stuff that came out was like tractor oil and was so thick. They must have tried to quieten the failing box when me (the biggest mug alive) came to buy the bloody thing

The latest VW stuff is fully synthetic. It is NOT semi synthetic

Its designed for the specific oil seals VW use in their boxes (ie the additives, the anti corrosion ingredients etc)

The VW oil is thinner as it offers better protection in both hot and cold situations - just because its thick, doesnt mean its any good.

Alot of gearbox rebuilders refill the boxes with engine oil to keep them quiet, but it does more damage than good.

I have the VW stuff in there at the moment but i'm not convinced its the best stuff out there, VW dont have the time to develop the best gear oils & lubricants at the end of the day. There stuff is no doubt good but I highly doubt its the best fluid available for the GTI box.

They made a bit of a pigs ear with the gearbox so maybe the fluid isnt up to scratch either :)
I think its worth giving the the Millers stuff a try, they design lubricants for Formula 1 cars so it must be pretty decent stuff.

Amusingly, they revised the oil after the gearbox epidemic. The breakdowns werent due to lack of lubrication though. Just low quality rivets

The GTI box isnt a race box...thats the bottom line

The millers stuff may be better, but I cant see it making any difference personally lol

Yeah there's no doubt you have to be careful with the gearbox and look after it

Do the Lupo 6 speed boxes suffer with any problems or are they alot stronger?

High quality Oil can make a big difference in most processes, I wont pretend to know alot about gearboxes but High quality oil can reduce wear on parts and surely that can only be a good thing when it comes to the gearbox.

I think i'll contact them and see what price it is available for, the Gear Oil direct from VW is just over £6 per litre.

I think i'm right in saying the capacity of the box is 2.8 ltrs?

Have you got a TPS price on it?

Nope, same problem, same bearings - just another gear.

I thought it was 3.4 litres as I had to get 4 bottles....but I may be getting confused with the Mk3

I havent got the TPS price yet mate but i'll try and get that today, didnt have chance yesterday.

Ahrite so the 6 speed boxes are pretty faulty too, sounds like they should have just kept the 5 speed box and re-devolped it.

I think it's 2.8 litres but i'm not 100% certain.
I have 2 litres of the VW Gear Oil at home but i'm quite tempted to get this Millers stuff instead.

I hope it isnt 3.4 litres lol

It cost £4.84(+VAT) - but that was last year so it may be slightly more.
I was advised to buy 3 bottles. Used two straight up and had a little bit left of the third :)

That's exactly what I used when my new box went in last month

It was literally 2.8 litres and I was told that filled it.
I paid £18 for 3 litres though from my Local Volkswagen parts department
