Servicing the old girl!

Just looked in my logbook and noticed that my next service is within 2 months. So the thing is, I wanna avoid going to a VW dealer cause they will just rip me off. The last service was done at some place called, AD Autotechnik. I've never heard of them although i do know they are based in surrey, has anyone on here heard of them? Anyway theres a VW specialist near me called The Phirm in hartley whitney, a few of my friends told me to go there, but i thought i'd ask everyone on here first.

Also, is it legal to have front numberplates stuck on the dashboard? seen a few dubs (mk4 golf) with them, and it looks really nice.

Re: numberplate, technically no as the law staes iirc that the numberplates must be displayed "at the foremost point of the car" and obviously the dash doesn't meet this criteria. Whether you get pulled for it depends on the police officer, how you drive, if they have more pressing issues etc haha! Hope this helps!

TBH, I'd just service it somewhere reputable (avoid Kwik fit, National, etc). VW themselves have cocked up on mine once and I won't be using them again (kinda ironic eh?).

Try and do as much as you can yourself, ie air, fuel and pollen filters (+ spark plugs if yours is a petrol). All easy jobs and don't take that long. Then just get a minor service (oil, oil filter and visual inspection) done at a garage you trust. As long as you can verify they use decent oil (as recommended by VW), you'll be fine.

Try and find a Bosch Service centre. I've been using one in Teesside for the past 3+ years. Genuine VAG parts, way cheaper than the stealers and really friendly (well, mine is). And they've never tried to rip me off. Standard service set me back £90 in October. And they supplied and fitted a GTI ARB for £112 all in as opposed to £200+ VW quoted.

Alternatively, try a Skoda dealer. They may be cheaper than VW and they're all the same underneath anyway.

What do i need to look out for or even change on a 60k service? Never serviced a car before, so im clueless lol

Oil + filter (obviously), all filters and sparkplugs if applicable.

Cambelt - every 4 years / 60k
Water pump - good idea to replace at 60k, esp. if the cambelt's being done.

Oil light came on today! so i topped it up with oil, only to find out that its coming back out again! how serious is this problem?!
