Re: Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread
Well tyres arrived yesterday , and they're on! unfortunately ,i havent' got a 21mm deep spanner to do the Spax front suspension top nut bolts all the way up ( cue knocking noise whilst driving)
So it's gonna sit in the drive a little longer till the spanner arrives ..
However since the gear oil change, the gearbox DEFINITELY feels much smoother, especially from cold where it used to be stiff as feck.

Re: Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread
Hokay so got the 21mm sapnner- the knocking noise has decreased but it STILL THERE. You can hear it just pushing down on the front end. Any ideas on what i could be? The top mounts are tight as. The top mount bearing case came apart when i took the old shocks on but i managed to re-seat it.. Plus i thought the top mounts only make a noise when turning and mine is only over bumps..
Any ideas??

Re: Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread- rubber clunking noise...
check the ARB mounts
and also check the wishbone bushes, as these make a similar noise.

Re: Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread- rubber clunking noise...
Right spent the entire day removing and fitting the front coilies 4 times
, Once fitting if you wobble or move the front of the car, it makes a rubbery watering almost noise, you can see through the arch the shock body moving...
1. The noise is not consistant with going over big bumps
2. On full lock or turning the spring makes a 'pinging' noise?
3. You can hear it most at low speeds.
I HAVE replaced the topmount assembly inc.bearing. This solved nothing either.
I was thinknig it could be an issue with the Spax coilies themselves, When compressing the damper it doesnt rebound- although not sure if the spring pulls it up once its on the car and moving..
Really lost on this one guys

Re: Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread- Spax Coilover Issues:(
Sounds a bit strange dude
When i fitted my RSX Spax coilies i found that it took a good few miles for everything to settle. If you think about it most of the bushes have spent their whole lives in a certain position. Now that the car is lower all the geometry will have changed and different stresses and strains will be put on the bushes. Mine made these squeaking noises due to this.
As for the damper not rebounding mine does the same. Once the spring is under pressure it will force the damper back up. What damping setting are you set at mate. I am at 14 clicks from soft on the front and back, however i know Ben runs his at almost the hardest setting.
Hope this helps mate, Im not the best at coilies but have a rough idea as i fitted mine but i'm sure the other guys on here can help further. As i said Ben has the Spax RSX's as well. Im really pleased with mine, you will love them

Well i've tried all the dampning settings but no fix, also when adjusting your fronts, does it stop when you go fully clockwise (hard) but continues to turn when going fully soft and then starts making a click on everyturn if you carry on?
Never had this issue on my other two gtis, im not even that low yet

Sorry alex, had a look at the wish bone and arb bushes but couldn't see anything evidently wrong? Is there a test I can do to be sure?

The wishbone bushes need to be about 2mm visible of the metal ring that encases them above where they sit. Mine popped out and was making a truely awful banging noise over bumps etc

Will double check tomorrow, not sure how that would cause the metal pinging whilst turning ..

Re: Joe's 3rd Gti Progress Thread
Well the rubbery noise is pretty much gone now, lowered the front end abit more and greased all the moving shock parts which seems to have done the trick. However the pinging noise when maneuvering is still there....
On to the good bits though
1) Gave the car a thorough clean yesterday- mostly inside inc scrubbing washing the fabrics with mild detergant, interior looks so fresh and new !
2) lowered the car to its final ride height for now, its just low enough to get a jack underneath on a gravel driveway which is perfect for me
3) Sorted out my OCD central airvent rattle when on high fan speed.
Will upload piccys later, stupidly didnt take any before and after shots
Already starting to turn heads on the way to work!, ( the car not me
