Quite a few have been written off over the years, and with only 1000 made in each colour, i was really interested to see how rare our little cars were nowadays
I soon received a reply from a chap who gave me the following link;
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/da ... licensing/
The relevant table is- VEH0120 (and VEH0121 will gives the numbers with a SORN)
The Table contains the number of vehicles licensed at the end of each quarter by make and model.
I spent a good 2 and a 1/2hrs searching through the list (as far as I could see there is no order to the list and no way of getting all the VWs together) so I had to sift thru quite a few 1000 to find any 'POLO GTI'
I picked up on the fact that there were like 5 Polo Dunes, so when I found Polo GTI I kept looking for more, and found 2 in the end

So I've replied back asking if he could find out any more info for me, preferably I wanted a table of remaining colours, like a chap on club lupo got, back in 2009
I supplied my GTIs reg in hope that thall help with finding the correct model code, as he said it might.
Unfortunately finding the numbers for the polo gti is not as easy as the lupo for the following reasons;
1) they had more members of staff back when the lupo table was made (they have just undergone a 30% reduction of staff across the whole department so have much less resource than they used to have)
2) the Lupo GTI was a specific make / model code on its own so it was simple to pull figures out of the database.
Anyway I'll let you all know when I get a reply

Your car is the M7836 version. However, if the numbers you quoted in your original email are correct then this model number must include some other cars (perhaps older / newer than the Mk V) as there are more than 1,000 silver ones.
Anyhow, the numbers on the licensed database at the end of 2010 were:
BLACK 988
BLUE 1
GREEN 1
GREY 1
RED 436
SILVER/ALUMINIUM 1391
WHITE 5
