I didn't see a place for newbies to say "hi" so though I would just jump straight in here
Got myself a 1.4 TDI yesterday that I am quite chuffed with (borrowed PH pic)



Needs a couple of simple things like a new aerial and some mats but other than that at nearly 89k with a full history it is in good nick.
I was told by the previous owner than the wheels aren't standard and are in fact off a Golf?
Also got a very sill question should the driver and passenger side mirrors be able to fold back,like if they were hit by another car?
I need a couple more inches space in the garage to get in and out and it would be much easier if the mirrors folded in,I don't want to force them too much as the whole thing flexes if you try too hard,they are electric if that makes any difference.

I think ur mirrors should fold in mine do although feel like they are gonna brake try lifting them a little first that makes mine easier.

I asked while I was picking up some parts from the stealership, they came back said 'your specific model of car doesn't have folding wing mirrors' I'm not sure sure how specific that was, it's a 2002 1.4 FSi and the mirrors definitely don't fold. Maybe someone has a guide on here on making them able to fold? The hinge mechanism is all there but probably locked off by the manufacturer for some wiring issue or something.

Those alloys look a lot like my Melbourne's, they were fitted on the 9n sport models

Hi mate. My Polo is a 2003 "52" plate.....and it is a base spec 1.2E (well that's how it started life anyway ) but mine does have folding wing mirrors too, but as said above they do feel a little stiff, try holding the wingmirror with both hands and push it away towards window with your right hand and apply equal force with your left hand pulling it towards and round, by the hinge. This means you're less likely to snap it. Howevert I didn't know some models came without folding wingmirrors, I'd be surprised if your 1.4TDI didn't have them....

my car has just sat down for 5 months, and my mirrors were extremly stiff. Just give them a good push, maybe try some wd40 on them.

As said above it would be shocking if a 1.4tdi didnt have them.

Thanks for the replies.
I have tugged and tugged,at the mirrors as well and they dont want to seem to move easily.
I will just have too loose some weight so I can get in easier.

Pretty sure all car mirrors fold regardless of make/model? Unless common sense is playing up again... I think that when a dealership refers to 'folding mirrors' they mean the electric variety.

One hand either side of the housing and give it a bit of force mate. It's not going to shatter/fall off.

And those alloys are from a Mk 4 Golf, very similar to Melbournes but Melbournes are a bit more rounded on the edges of the spokes. Still a good wheel though, suits the car well.

Is there anyway of checking online what equipment the car has from the chassis number or something?
