GTi Brakes - Calliper and disk upgrade

Post by ttaw2 »

Howdy all - I'm new to the forum, also post on porka.net under the same name and i'm looking for some different opinions:

Has anyone heard of people doing calliper upgrades on the GTi.. As far as i'm aware, Wilwood, Brembo and AP Racing will do callipers and disks that will fit... Anyone got any experience with any of these companies - good or bad so i can have some form for comparrison?

At the moment i'm running standard disks & ebc greenstuff pads, fitted by ebc.. and they're shyte, i get really bad fade on them, and they're jsut spewing brake dust... I'm planning a major power hike in the future, hence the serious brake upgrade now... sod the 1.8T, give me some bloody throttle bodies..

Currently, the only mods i'm running is ICE, so i'm going to start branching out into some subtle adjusting of VWs fine curves.... Hopefully not via a hedge though!

In the pipeline, kamei badgeless grille, mini mirror on the drivers side from germany, either Compomotive RL or Borbet design A alloys, staying with the 15 rim, but probably 15x8 and stretch 195/45/15s over them.. oh, and a set of FK coilovers to dump tha heap...

All i need is the cash now..

A set of Brembo's off an Ibiza Cupra R would do the trick (this is what I was planning)... They're good, but you'll need 16" rims to fit them under.

Ahaa, like the idea of the ibiza brakes.. do you know whether they're a straight swap, of if they require fettling to get them on..

16s may be the way forward anyway.. Now I think about it, the Borbets only come in 16s anyway, in either 7 or 9 inch widths... might have to be the 16x7 then.. don't think that 9s will go?

That would look fantastic :D only downside being buying a new set of 16" alloys to accomodate them... :?

I'm a bit short of cash and my parents don't approve of me (mildly) modifying my 'perfectly good' GTi...

don`t know if they`ll fit but a mate of mine suggested Golf G60 front brakes and calipers, 288mm. guess i`d need to change the hubs and bits, anyone any ideas??

Ibiza Cupra R brakes should fit, provided the alloys have enough clearance. Seem to recall there was a group buy going on on a corrado forum maybe...?

The Brembos look like a good (and comparitively cheap) option. But after experiencing a few cossies running APs (there quite common in the Ford tuning world apparantly) I would have to go for them.
