Name that sound!

Post by dantheram »

Ok, next problem with my beloved polo - a strange metal on metal sound.

The sound can be heard when the car is full lock left and i believe, on occassion, full lock right. So essentially when the steering is at max range.

The sound is most definitely metal rubbisn/grinding on metal, a crunching kenetic sound.

Any ideas?

The noise does seem to get worse when reversing under full lock so i think it may well be the cv joint.

Where is best to source new CV joints from?

VW is best. Try a garage that can order via TPS

Cheers for the help, Alex.

Is it not easier to replace the whole shaft on the gti, rather than just the joint?

Its quicker to replace the shaft as one, but replacing the joint isnt particularly difficult. Its just messy

So the only benefit in replcing the entire shaft is time?

just checking it not one of those jobs where it makes sense to renew the ajoining part aswell.

Yes

Shouldnt do. The shaft is a tapered spline made of hardened steel and couldnt really get damaged. Its normal the CV joint housing and bearings that get damaged

Also important to note the GTI has specific driveshafts and CV joints compared to any other 6n2 as it has EDL (electronic differential lock) on the gearbox.

Thinking of going to the breaker, dont like the sound of 2 TPS CV joints, probably be some ridiculous ££.

Salvaged some excellent window regs/motors off a x-reg gti, so will look up the cv's on that i reckon.

If they are coming from a breaker, you must ensure it hasnt had any side/front damage or the shafts could be damaged

TPS pricing for the CV joints isnt actually that bad!

Thing is when i look at the joint on the noisey side it looks fine. Normally they split and empty out the grease thus leading to grinding but mine are fine in term of splits.

Confused
