Well after taking my car in to the dealers today for the boot catch / lock etc.... to be checked out i've now found that the electrics on the car are going haywire!!!!!
I've just tried to put the air blower onto recycle and nothing happens and best of all the leccy windows have got a mind of their own! When using the driver's side switches the drivers window does nothing at all and the passenger window goes down when you push the switch up or pull it up!!! the only way i could get the window back up was by using the passenger side switch........What's all that about???
They were checking the boot door lock / associated wiring for the boot courtesy light and dashboard boot open light cos they were both non-operational. They have told me i need a new lock catch and also a new wiring loom???? but how on earth they've managed to b****r up the windows and blower controls i don't know.
Looks like another drive back there tomorrow to try and find out what's going on!!!

hi mate. iv got a 1.4 16v and im having the same problem. today i got in my car and pushed on the switch for my drivers side window to go down and nothing happed the only thing that works is the passenger side window but when you press the switch to go up it goes down. the central locking dont work either on the drivers side door.
i dont want to take it too vw as iv got no warranty left. can you let me no what the problem was and how much it cost.

I've had problems with the electric windows too. Not long after I got the car the motor died on the passenger side window, thankfully it was closed when I discovered the fault! And secondly, a week after that was fixed the driver's door switch for the driver's side window malfunctioned and was replaced.
Oh and whilst we're on the subject of electrics my horns failed too. Is that electric or mechanical mind you...? Nm. Anyway it was all done under warranty, although when they told me the price of the leccy window motor I was a bit shocked - £200
thank gawd they were paying...
I guess the best prevention for forking out a load of cash is to test everything works when you go see the car (I didn't test the a/c and now I'm paying £120 to get it regassed
) and do your best (if buying from a dealer) to get a warranty!

Mk5 pimp i'll have to let you know what happens....i took it in today and they are gonna look at the windows when they do the boot lock a week on Thursday (17th June).
When i got in the car this morning i had a grand total of three differant faulty window combinations.....I'll explain..................
Combo 1 - Drivers windows totally inoperative passenger window goes down whether button pressed down or pulled up
Combo 2 - Drivers window works manual only no auto function. Passenger window works manual only no auto function
Combo 3 - Drivers window works manual only no auto function. Passenger window works ok manual & auto.
At the minute it seems to have settled down onto the third variant which i'm pretty happy with untill they look at it next week.
Right i'm off to the seaside for the day so i'll catch ya later.....I'll bring some rock back for ya all

Yet another common fault
My drivers side window goes down ok but when it goes up it stops halfway and comes back down, I then have to keep hold of the button to get it all the way up.
I took it to VW and they brought up my cars history on screen and the motor had been replaced 3 times before on my drivers door. The quoted me about £180 + vat to fix and I told them they could shove it and that I want it fixed as a gesture (or whatever they call it) cos I couldnt afford to payout £180 + vat per year to have a common fault fixed. Im waiting for their reply!

Common problem
I heard the electric motors for the windows are prone to rust. They seize up cos of this and the electrics therefore appear to fail. It's usually cos someone has power washed the doors and inner ledges... the water gets in the drain holes and evaporates up in the door and corrodes the electric motors internals really quickly.
My Electric windows are just starting to play up aswell 
sometimes the drivers side switch for the passenger side window just refuse's to work, However the next day its fine I really want to take it to vw for repair under warranty but I just know when I take my car their it will be OK so im waiting for it to fail for good. Didn't realise that so many people are having trouble with the windows. Deffinately another common fault.

Sorry about that Mr Pimp sir.....I forgot to post the outcome the other day when i took the car in............................
They were carrying out work on my boot lock latch and charging it to the sales dept as it had never worked the boot light since i had bought the car from them and i asked them to check the windows while they did the boot lock....... I picked the car up and all they said was that they had repaired a wiring fault and they didn't charge me for it either..... I did have a check of the back of the switch unit itself but all seemed ok and the fault was still on when i dropped the car off with them.
I didn't ask exactly what they had done cos i was running late and the England v Switzerland game was about 10 mins away from starting so i just picked up the keys and scarpered.
