Fuel Tank Leak on 04 1.4 TDi Dune

Post by bumlardy »

Hi

I have a fuel leak from my tank and am struggling to pin down where it is coming from. It is not the result of any 'trauma' so far as I'm aware, I always used to fill up before I completely run out and a few weeks ago I filled up and noticed a diesel smell on my way home. If I only fill it to 2/3 or less there is no leak and no problem, but if I brim it then fuel comes out as I go around corners!? I went in circles on a disused car park and left a nice diesel path in my wake. I have removed the fuel pump assembly from under the grommet under the rear seat and replaced the seal but the problem remains. I have had it over a pit with engine running and there is no leak, it seems to be related to the movement of the car. Could there be a crack on the TOP of the tank or something? Diesel DOES seem to accumulate in the top of the fuel pump assembly under the seat but it is not coming from the either the feed or return pipes (or at least it wasn't while I had the seat off blipping the throttle to test it. I could imagine this accumulation being what is spilled on the floor a I corner but is not necessarily the source!?

I was hoping to avoid having to buy a new tank..

I'd be grateful of any other suggestions from anyone who may have had a similar problem.

In anticipation,
Dan.
