Pug 106

I know this is a bit of a silly place to ask really, but I'm sure some of you will have had some experience with them.. I've just been offered a pug 106 for Â£300, and it looks in pretty decent nick, taxed, tested, new brakes all round, just needs a speedo cable fitting which should take about 10 minutes.. anything anyone knows to be wary of, reasons I should stick to the old polo etc?

Nah, it's a bog standard 1.1. Thing is, it's newer and a bit more powerful than the polo, and it's ridiculously cheap compared to what they usually sell for, I'm just wondering if it's worth it

I'd be wondering why the person's selling it so cheap if it does usually go for a higher price

She's owned it for a month to get her to work and back and has just bought a spangly new BMW, and so she has no space and wants rid of it ASAP.. she seemed pretty genuine to me, she's had the car maintained during the month she had it which you don't really do if you're just trying to flog a knackered old banger

m8's girlfriend had an N reg 1.1, she got rid in the end due to it being a money pit.
after 2 ecu's and numerous broken engine parts the car drank petrol like there was no tomorrow and ran really bad.

May have just been her car but it put me off ever owning one.

Ive always found that Pug's are pritty nippy.

Not sure about the 1.1 though, dont you want a bigger engine?.

The 1.4's 'go like the wind' !

What reg is it?

To be fair my mum had a G-reg 205 for at least 2 years (ugly grey-with-yellow-trim thing she got cheap off an aunt) and never really had a problem with it. Seemed comfy and sprightly enough. That *was* the mid 90s however

In the end she changed it for a Punto because she wanted something with 5 doors, a 5-speed shift and more power (it was also a 1.1 - but the 106 may go a leetle faster with that engine).

Figures look alright - you get 60bhp, a touch over the ton flat out, and 15 secs 0-60 from less than 100cc's on top of the Polo. (But then it never was the high score in the HP-per-L stakes

)
Plus it seems you might not have to rev it too hard for that - in comparison, the 1.0 (954cc) injection has similar power but only mid-90s top speed and an 18 second 0-60... someone's stolen all the torque there

so the 1.1 must have some to steal.

Why don't you take it for a test drive, quite a long one if she'll allow it and the insurance covers it? Get a better feel for it, see if it's large enough inside, you like the way it drives and handles, not too flimsy or noisy, good driving position and comfy seats....
...and importantly in a french car, if my abortive Lemon AX tryout is anything to go by, to see if you can reach the pedals! ("agh! the MF'ing brake is too far left! the steering column's blocking my leg!")

SUMMARY
The best supermini of the early 1990s, the Peugeot 106 was developed from the Citroen AX.
(yikes! definately test drive it. AX had even worse safety features than polo btw)
It offered robust construction, excellent ride and refinement for its time, plus superb fuel economy and lots of driver satisfaction. A wide choice of cars at affordable prices means it's near the top of the used supermini league.

So some good, some bad there

my girlfriend currently has a 106 only a year old, its a cool little car and i recommend them, but i wouldnt drive one give me the polo any day. Persnally i would be sticking with the vw over a pug

if u wanted better handling and performance go for the 106, but its not all about performance, so keep the dub

Erk.. I think this one's an old carburetted one so no ecu to worry about, but still :/

Yeah, I'd not even consider the car unless I could go for a test drive really. That's just asking for it to be horrible

I think it's a J reg, btw. One of the earlier ones anyway, but still a good amount newer than my current machine..

Yeah, I carry passengers from time to time so it could be a bit of an issue.. although I'd hardly call the polo 'spacious' in the back seat, I tried it the other day and had to stick my knees either side of the drivers seat just to fit

Yeah, I'm still after POO's mk4 ideally.. but it's very rare to find a new-ish polo as cheap as this.

I think probably I'll give the pug a miss really. I'm not terribly worried about the reliability, working on my car is pretty much a hobby of mine anyway

However, I'm thinking even compared to the polo it's going to be pretty tiny, and I do the odd trip to wales and back from time to time with a friend and a load of luggage, might be a bit of a squash doing that..
