New GTI - retrofitting? (UPDATED with pics)

Post by tompitt87 »

Gentlemen (ladies?),

Ordered myself a new GTI on 2/5 with a "provisional" delivery date of 1st of Sept for the new reg. With a warning that it may be delayed beyond this...

However, totally out of the blue today i had a phonecall from the deal saying its arrived today!! :S :D and can be collected as soon as ive paid the rest of the deposit and signed the paperwork! This is verrrryyyy strange as im sure youll agree but im not complaining :P

However my question is this, i have only spec'd the standard RCD310 stereo and would like the RCD510 in there but they are telling me it will be close to a grand to have it retrofitted by them. Ive found them online for between 250-400 but im wondering how easy are they to fit and code etc?

Any help will be greatly appreciated :D

ps. pics will be provided once its delivered, havent seen many (any?) red GTIs on here....?

You must have one that was already on the system with your exact spec probably a cancelled order from another dealer or something like that. Any way that's good news for you :D

You can retro fit the RCD510 from what I have read on other threads on here is that it can be easily fitted and just needs a reprogram. This is a great head unit as I have one in my GTI. However you can also retro fit the RNS510 is you fancy it?

There are a few GTI's in Red, Black and Silver plus one Blue on here but most are White.

yeah well about 4 weeks ago i was told it would be in production middle/end of july and "should" be here for 1st september. But then today they said it was built 15/6, in the UK 22/6 and at the dealer today! Seems a little wierd but im not too fussed as you can imagine! Should be collecting it Thursday :D

Sounds straight forward, i probably will pick one up from eBay or something. In terms of the "reprogramming" what does that involve exactly? Any special hardware needed to do it?

Fitted one in the wife's SEL (came out of my new Scirocco) when the Polo was 1 hour old !

Took all of 10 minutes to do the swap, no coding at all. Piece of pi55. :D

Image

Even fitted a full VW Bluetooth kit to it as well (dealer said this was impossible) :)

So its literally just, fascia off, unscrew old one, swap for new one, screw in, fascia back on?! Cant argue with that, ill pick one up off ebay then for 3-400 :)

I assume everything works straight off the bat ie. MDI for iPod/USB and MFD displaying radio info?

cheers mate :)

options i had are:

-rear tints
-sensor pack (cruise control + r.parking sensors)
-convenience pack (auto-dimming RVmirror + rain sensing wipers)
-Climatronic air-con system

Tried to add the MFSW and 510 to the order but it was too late, as it arrived 2 months early!

I agree if this had been an option when I ordered mine a year ago I would have gone for it as it would have matched the RCD510 which I have.

Is it not possible to simply buy a control unit with the white display and replace the old blue one? They can't be too different surely?

guys, ive managed to get myself an RCD510 unit off eBay for £295 (not bad) it should be with me on Tuesday, im aware that its just a case of removing the plastic stereo surround, undoing a few screws and swapping the units over. But how does the plastic surround come off? i assume its just clipped in but obviously i dont want to break/damage it when trying to remove it...does anyone have an idea of the best way to remove it?

also, does anyone know where the radio code for the 310 would be? as i will be selling it once the 510 is fitted and working... cheers
