Hi all wheel and suspension questions.

Post by Mobile chicane »

Have just got wifey an X plate polo gti.

Its done 150k miles but it was a steal and its one of the rarer 5 door ones so suits her needs perfectly.

Obviously I will be replacing all the long term consumables over the next few months as this car will be a keeper for 2-4 years.

All the belts and the water pump are being done saturday, I've already done oil, filter, plugs + air filter + the front brakes have had new discs + pads and I'll do the rears when I find out how to ratchet back the handbrake latch if there is one.

So onto my questions.

The handling seems a bit sloppy which I am putting down to a number of things, firstly the rear tyres are mis matched ( sizes are the same but the manafacturer and tread style amount of ware are difrent )

So seeing as I have the bbs split rims what are a good tyre to go for, I want a decent all rounder that gives a softer ride ( if possible ) and lasts well.

I also reckon the suspension is well past its best so I'm looking to replace it, I DONT want to lower the car I want standard suspension components ( we had a mk3 golf gti which was lowered, never again)

I havent gone to vw yet and GSF said they didnt list suspension for the gti so where can I get stock suspension components from ?

I also need to take the slop out of the drivers seat runners + the lift lower assembly any sugestions ?

As for Tyres i would strongly recommend Continental Sport Contact 2's sized 195/45 R15.Fantastic tyres wear very well, grip very well and are not the most expensive tyre although are more towards the top end of the scale.

Suspension if i were you i would keep my eyes peeled on the Polo forums and ebay for a standard GTI setup that somebody has removed in order to upgrade their own,new prices from VW wil be quite expensive and they do pop up quite often on the sites.

Handling issues will defiantly be anti roll bar bushes and your wishbone bushes mate.

Get those replaced and you will be laughing. Altho I have just done mine or had a go at doing them and now need need new bolts.... So be warned ha.

Tyres I go for are yokohoma usually, try http://www.blackcircles.com there really good.

Let us no how it goes and post some pictures, pictures are fun ha.

This is a guy on eBay who is selling a complete gti 2001 suspension aswell.

Thanks for the replys.

I decided to go original vw as the parts werent that expensive ( £50 a shock ) and I'd like the car to remain original.
