Help needed on last straw with polo but dont want to give up

Post by HD9POLOGTi »

Not really had chance to update my progress thread as over last couple of months due to some problems but still not wanting to give up and sell could really do with some help :(

Problems

Gearbox went now recon'd
New clutch
Now there is a grinding noise coming from front hoping its wheels bearing however had a new one in b4 gearbox went but as i drove home to change break there was a clunking noise when i turned when i looked the mechanic had not tightend the drive shaft nut!!!!!!! Since then the noise has returned hopefully the wheel bearing any tips on how to check before i buy a bearing???

And finally the car started to missfire and judder whilst driving changed the ht leads spark plugs and the coilpack The misfiring stopped (whilst driving) now when i start the car it starts to make alot of noise and misfire however if i leave the car started before setting off it stops

I have cleaned the lambda sensor however its still happened

Dont want to sound like a miserable old git but i really dont want to give up on the car ive posted this as a last hope any tips from anyone would be much appreciated

1 Way to check the wheel bearing:

Jack up the car so that the wheel is clear of the ground.
Turn the tyre through a full rotation and have a good listen..

Then take hold of the tyre top and bottom and rock the top and bottom of the tyre in and out, it should feel very little moment..
Then take hold of the sides of the tyre and again rock the tyre in and out, again feeling for any slack/ wobble..

Turn the tyre through 90 degrees and repeat, you should be able to feel any slack/ wobble after these checks.

There maybe other ways, that is just 1 way I know..

Wheel bearings on these cars don't usually tend not to fail unless you're very low or rocking positive camber...

I had a grinding noise on my Gti when i bought it, changed the wheel bearing and still the noise was there. The noise occurred under braking and rolling slowly. After taking the car off the road to change suspension, refurb wheels and do a full service the noise disappeared. Still can't pinpoint what it was.

Can you describe your noise in greater detail?

Yes mate the car is sitting low on coilies so was expecting the bearing to go but so quickly??? Also te noise seems to get louder the faster you go sound more of a rumble would this have anything to do with the camber problem i mentioned above and how would i sort it been told about twi bolts behind disc but which ones are there any pucs or guides on here??

ok quick way to correct the camber:
Remove wheel, this will expose the two bolts holding the lower suspension strut to the Hub. Loosen these bolts off ( will be tight). This will now mean you can move the hub around as it isen't fully connected to the suspension as such. Now pull the hub outwards towards you as far as you can go, hold it in that position while you tighten the nuts back up. Put the wheel back on and you're sorted.

I've had a similar lumpy running and juddering on start up..

I was advised by someone on here to check and clean the airbox, give it a good clean with carb/ throttle cleaner, check the filter (and/ or replace it), check and clean the throttle body..
Then check the HT leads are all giving a good 'spark' to the plug and check (I renewed) the spark plugs..

She's running much smoother now and not juddering on start up.

Hope that helps!

No problem.

Definitely worth getting the Spark Plugs out and give them a clean (if not replacing them).
Also, check the HT Leads are all nice and clean and pressed firmly in place on the Spark Plug and on the Distributor.

It's also worth making sure that your A/C / Heater is fully Off, just to ensure it isn't the A/C Compressor Clutch sticking..
(This is very unlikely, but just a way to rule it out).

Also, if you do a search on here, there is a "How-To" on how to use the Climate Control screen to check for some fault codes.

Hope you have a successful weekend!
