My car is in now having the new rings/scrapers fitted and should be ready at the end the week. Not expecting it to be a success. Getting to the point where the car needs this much work has made me realise that this really is unacceptable for a new car and I am seriously thinking of rejecting it. Also had a look at the TPI ( asked for a copy but VW won't allow these to be circulated outside the business) it was dated 22/07/11 and was titled something like Heavy oil usage and premature piston ring wear. There was no mention of this being restricted to a batch of engines or to chassis numbers there were two references one was engine code CAVE and a work card number which appeared to be unique.
The TPI had details of the tests to be carried out as I stated before and also contained details of the high level work to be carried out such as remove front bumper, head lights and others like remove head and sump with times for each. I asked about honing and the tech told me that they use a tool to clean the bores which they decribed as like emery cloth on a round drill attachment which will give the rings a prepared surface to work against when rebuilt. I have no idea if this is enough to be considered as honing but appears to be better than nothing.

This is very interesting Edi30, like yourself I am not expecting replacement rings to make much difference. I have now covered the 1000km and am trying to contact my dealer. My dealer is normally very quick to get back to me but I am having to do some chasing even though I am on a 'priority' case, or so I thought. I suspect VW are in a bit of a quandary with this situation.
Like yourself I am not happy with major work to be potentially carried out, things never go back quite the same as an original factory build. I would be looking to potentially reject the car if this does not prove to be satisfactory.

Interesting that it seems to only affect the CAVE engine, not any of the other CAV platforms so it seems that indeed, it is limited to the Polo GTI and probably the Audi A1 Sport. Emery cloth on a drill attachment?! no, I wouldn't call that re-honing, I would call that a cheap-ass dodgy method to de-glaze the bore. To the poster that suggested contacting the media, i would say that's a bloody good idea. VW keep winning awards for a car that is catastrophically flawed, they need to learn a lesson.

I suggested contacting the car publications and have done so. (Editor of auto-express so far) Feel free to do the same. Let's see if they are interested in this story. We need the clout of a major mag to get some answers from VW.

Nice move John, I will do the same. I now have my car booked in for the oil 'weigh' test in just over a weeks time. Oil ..DSG's ..does it matter?! Basically we have cars not fit for purpose. Mine is stuck at the dealers for the last week and is probably going to be there for another two as the oil and engine situation is stuffed. I'm not allowed to drive it.

Real pitty to hear about this! VW should really own up to this and should either go back to the drawing board and suss this problem out or refund its customer (which will probably not happen).
Althought apart from the gearbox issue in the mk6 polo gti which was rectified in the later ones there were no reported Oil problems iirc!
Has this also been a problem in the VRs, Ibiza Cupra and bocanegra?

Yes you are right, Evo do have a car and guess what the oil light has just come on apparently. They are going to look into this.
We could of course reject our cars under ' Breach of warranty'.

I'm not after sympathy, precious. In fact, after being on here for a few months, I've realised that I'm not going to take anything away really. In the main, it's a group of sycophantic kids sucking each other off.
