Hi all, driving home tonight the missus told me her Y plate 6n2 100bhp suddenly lost power, the dash lights came on (inc oil etc). She also mentioned that before she drove the 30 miles home she had 3/8 of a tank of fuel (half way between quarter and half) but when she got home she needs fuel again and that she has so far this week put £40 in since Tuesday and she drives 70 miles per day.
Any ideas/thoughts would be helpful.

Loss of Power & Using Lots of Fuel
Do you have access to vag com ?.
Fuel could be a leak or a lambda issue. As for the electrical fault the user manual or a Haynes guide should shed light on that

Re: Loss of Power & Using Lots of Fuel
You dont think the 2 issues are related then. When i say loss of power i mean the car will not rev above 2k. It happened once when i was driving out of Tesco. I just turned the car off and on again but that wasnt at 60mph driving on a dual carriage way. As you can imagine it scared the s**t out of the missus.
As for having access to VagCom then the answer is nope, i have access to other software but not that. Think i'll pick up a cable now off ebay. Need one anyway. Would the fault be logged. I have the engine light on anyway due to a faulty EGR valve.

when was the last time the car was serviced?
my mate has a 1l lupo E. at the begining of the summer her car suffered the same problem pretty much
she was out driving when suddenly some lights flashed up which included the oil light and she lost power
she pulled over on the side of the road and called the RAC he asked her some stupid questions (ie. have you got fuel, oil, driving with the car in gear)
but all were fine (which she already knew). the car started up fine and was back to normal.
she put it down to her mum putting rubbish fuel in the car and running it on fumes a lot whilst she was away at uni.
but it happened again a few weeks later, and again and again.
the oil light would flash up and suddenly the car would pretty much die, she would try to gain speed and it would slighly, and they die back down again.
After crawling home at about 10mph one day she took the car off the road, so I got my boyfriend who works at VW to pop over to hers with one of the techs and have a little look. it could have been a number of things, with the symptoms the car had, but they told her first to try a few simple things.
she wasnt gonna bother at first, and was just going to scrap the car, as we honestly thought it was going to be much to much to fix the car and there wasnt much point, but her dad decided to changed the spark plugs and found one to be pretty much disformed.
shes changed the spark plugs, and now; an MOT, and a month later, shes had no problems what so ever.
it was a bit of a random fix to the problem, but seeing the sparkplug and how bad it was, it couldnt have been doing any good.
and this is the longest the car has gone all summer without any problems
so i would suggest trying that first. if not, ill try and find out what the other possible causes were.

Just get a vag com reading on it. As said above changing all the service parts may help greatly
Re: Loss of Power & Using Lots of Fuel
Well the oil, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter were changed 4500 miles ago. It may be worth changing the fuel filter again as the misus has run the car pretty dry on a couple of occasions. I didnt bother with the spark plugs or leads. I read on here somewhere that NGK were the best plugs to get for the car. What about the leads, she currently has the red ones. I'd like to keep them the same so do halfrauds sell them (trader card you see) or are they stealer part only.
Re: Loss of Power & Using Lots of Fuel
Mine did something similar driving back from reading festival... Sudden loss of power, refused to rev past about 2.5k... can't say much for fuel consumption as I pulled into the hard shoulder to check it out, but ended up needing a new ignition coil... Car was misfiring, but a new coil sorted that out
. If it's doing the same as mine aparrantly it could be either the coil, ignition leads or spark plugs - worth testing before you buy replacements just incase that doesn't solve it!
