mk4 1.4 8v rough idle

hello everyone. can someone please advise me. i have a 1999 1.4 8v 6n polo and its running really rough on idle and the engine shakes and exhaust sounds a bit poppy but when i rev the car the car is fine and engine does not shake at all and exhaust note sounds perfect. iv been having this problem for a couple of months now and its driving me crazy. so far iv replaced the oil and oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, leads, coil pack, dizzy cap and rotor arm. iv also cleaned around the throttle body but not actually taken it off because im not sure if it has to be reset using vagcom. i can find no vacuume leaks from the throttle body either. iv also had the fuel injectors looked at and had the engine compression tested and every thing was fine.they did however say it could be my cam belt which is causing the rough idle when ticking over or when im stopped in traffic, does this sound right or can anyone think of any thing stupid i could have missed. please help and thanks for reading.

Your timing could be one tooth out on the cam belt - that can cause a rough idle. Get the timing checked
