Got so much time for this. Need to get my Mani on, decat, remap and then I shall to be tearing s**t up as well. Also now with this colder weather i bet you will notice a lot of difference with the typhoon mate. Driving home tonight in 6 degrees made it go soooo much better. And mine is toilet compared to your beast!! Ha

What about an oil cooler fella? Would look awesome under your engine bay and would serve a purpose tooTrottagti wrote:Cheers guys, really noticing the power now. I can finally enjoy the car after a while it's nice......

Before you do what oil temps are you running?
Oil needs to be 80 to dissolve the s**t and do the job its there to do (and one of the most important things in the engine)
Oil will sit at 100 all day.
Cheap oil will start to degrade at 110
Most oil will start to degrade above 120
Really good (double ester synthetic) oil will stand temps of up to 130 without degrading.
If your oil isnt in its operating range your engine its not going to work well. Dont overcool your oil! Seen too many people fit an oil cooler becuase the oil is at 110 sometimes. Seen people fit oil cooler because they do 1 trackday a year ... and run with too-cool oil for the rest of the year.
If your concerned you can send your oil away for testing when you drop it - and it will tell you if there is anything wrong in the engine, if the oil really needed replacing, or if you should have replaced it a while ago (or need to use a better oil)
If you want to spend some money - spend it on oil analysis - it really treats your car and gives you piece of mind
And if several people do it (like we did in one of the other clubs I'm in) you can even see which oils are worth the money and which arent!

Cheers for the info mate, what your saying makes alot of sense so I may leave it as no warning lights come on etc.....
Dunno how to check oil temp is that the dial in the car already I take it? If so then 90 I think.
Just wanted to add something different is all but in this case il leave it... Although my engine bay gets freaking hot like oven hot..... On long runs it feels harder to change gear etc...??

The gauge in the instrument cluster is the coolant temperature
Nothing wrong with sticking to a 10 / 13row oil cooler setup on the gtis, just make sure you're sticking to good quality VW oil. Opieoils do a variety of fully synthetic (proper ester types) for reasonable prices if you're wanting to look. I get my gearbox oil from them. One of the main reasons your engine bay is so hot, is that you havent wrapped your exhaust manifold yet. Something for the to-do list perhaps!
You * should * be using a decent oil. Minimum VW's own syntha, otherwise Millers; esp. since ur running 150bhp

Yeah I run VW oem oil and Im not a fan of the wrapped manifold tbh, may make my own cooling vent in the bonnet like on the front edge, just cut away a small lip and duct it over the engine perhaps....
Would like to do the oil cooling but need to find away of measuring the oil temp somehow, and yeah coolant, der lol!! My brain is pants sometimes...

All you need to measure oil temp is a VDO gauge or similar and oil temperature sensor some are built in to sump plugs etc. Then a bit of wiring etc.

Un-wrapped Manifolds look immense but the heat wrap really does do a good job despite looking a little dull
You might have got a couple of more bhp on the dyno if yours was wrapped because it makes a big difference for a relatively small price.
Keeps heat down massively in the engine bay too, you can literally touch the manifold when the car is running up to temp with the wrap on there

You'll need a separate oil temp gauge to measure oil temp, you'll find it take a good while longer than the water to warm up, and remember oil has a working range of ~80-120 too cold is as bad as too hot!
Unwrapped manifold will not alter oil temps, just engine bay temps.
Manifolds get hot - http://youtu.be/OrrN3AEEpDY - here's one of mine on the dyno (ignore the low FPS, not sure the vid used to work fine (its old like 3-4 years old you tube vid) but you can still see it glowing red hot. Yours wont get that hot, that's a track car running 1.8bar boost and EGT's are always higher on Turbo Charged cars.
