I had a cam belt failure yesterday and am selling the Polo GTI for spares or repairs.
Prognosis
The garage fitted a new cam belt kit (£290) in the hope the engine was unscathed but ended up needing to be opened up. All 16 valves need replacing but the rest of the engine is intact. Garage quoted me £800 to replace valves + the full works (oil, pumps etc), so including all parts and labour - which is not bad if you think about it. However, I decided it was time for me to move on.
History since I've owned it
- 2000 Polo GTI, 5 Door, Silver - 3 owners + me since 2009. Current mileage 109k
- Will be SORN'd once I get car back.
- MOT until June 2012.
- Replaced all 4 tyres with Toxo Proxes T1R's in Sept 2011 @ 107k - practically new and cost £350
Also replaced front left wheel bearing and had toe/camber corrected at a cost of £210.
- Refurbed 15" BBS RXII alloys in June 2010 @ 91k - still very good condition, just needs cleaning
- Reconditioned gear box fitted June 2010 @ 91k
- New alternator and brakes fitted Oct 2009 @ 86k
- Halfords Battery HCB063 fitted July 2009 @ 84k - Still has 2 years left on guarantee and no problem starting in winter.
Receipts for all the above
Specs
- All standard GTI specs, including Climatronic, Xenon, head unit and CD changer
- The only customisations are the aero wipers, bee sting ariel and red tube around front grill - lol
- Replaced driver's side window mechanism this summer and works well but the worst of the weather has yet to come.
- No bumps or scrapes apart from odd scratch/chip that you would expect from a car this age.
- Averaged 40mpg over the last 2 years according to my iPhone (mostly motorway miles)
- Remote locking plays up sometimes but just need to re-sync it
- Apart from the engine that needs valves replaced, everything was in general working order and good condition.
I don't have tools to take apart the Polo myself so looking for someone to take the whole car off me, for spares or repairs.
Car location = Cambridge. Buyer must arrange transport themselves.

I plan to upload more photos once I get the car back from the garage.
