Hi everyone / steering wheel and pedal judder

Post by p3atx »

Hi everyone! , as of yesterday I am the proud owner or a gti 9n2, and im absolutely loving it!

Only problem being that when i hit the brakes, expecially from speed i get a lot of judder through the steering wheel and pedals, any ideas??

Cheers Sean

Warped discs. Would put money on it. Need to find out what's warping them though I went through four sets of discs and pads before finding out I'd actually warped my hub

so what are the common things that cause them to warp? what should i be looking for? Any recommendations on discs and pads?

Hub faces being warped, suspension bushes being worn, or callipers sticking. Can simply be caused by heavy braking and then leaving your foot on the brakes at traffic lights. And as far as discs go especially with your gti could recommend EBC have them and they seem real nice. Or quite simply nothing's much better than the OEMs need to ensure that they're always changed in axle pairs and with new discs you need new pads.

May as well upgrade to G60's, larger braking surface so better heat dissipation and less chance of warping them . . . .

Could just be that the discs are below the wear limit. Warped hubs are unlikely so I wouldn't worry about that yet

its not really best to go spunking money at a garage without first checking the easy things yourself.

Yeah just saying, if you know a decent garage its beat to get it done need to check the wear depth, run out. If theres nothing else you'll be doubling money away on new discs and pads which will just warp again.

thanks guys that helps a lot, luckily I'm a mechanical engineer and love cars so I do everything myself. Cant bare to pay £30 hour for something a can do myself.

The G60 upgrade looks good, would you recommend the callipers were to be changed to, or will just the discs be a decent improvement? I'm planning on poly bushing the front end anyway so that should eliminate that, its just the hubs I need to check, is there a way of doing it?

Once you've got the discs off you can just use a run out meter to check the run out on he hub just like you would the disc. I believe the g60 pads are a good improvement with no mods but I think you need new callipers for the pads. The EBC pads are shamfered and slotted for better run in and disapation of the heat. Just need to check the run out on both. Easy if you know what you're doing! :D definitely check this before rinsing money on new discs
