Couple of queries - brakes and ECU

Post by TriggerFish »

Hi all,

I recently upgraded to the 280mm G60 brakes, which seems to have improved the feel a fair bit. I'm not insured to drive the Polo currently, so only had a limited space to test in. I've also been looking at S2 master cylinders, which are meant to improve the feel further, but can I find one? Of course not!

Anyhoo, the Polo has now become something for me to mess around/learn with, as well as slowly turn into a track car since I find it horrid too commute it, but love too much to sell! I've been looking into bike carb conversions, and I've got stuck on two points so far:

1) Brakes - if I swap over to carbs, will I need to do anything for the vacuum feeds for the brake servo, or does the Polo not need anything like that? Will it work straight off as if nothing had changed?

2) I was thinking of leaving the ECU in place for 2 reasons - if it's a load of crap, I can revert back by just plugging the old manifold/TB back on/in and off I go, and I can keep the immobiliser systems in place (I think), plus it runs the lights/alarms etc.

Anyway, will the speedo/rev gauge work still? I guess the speedo is gearbox driven, but I don't know about the RPM. Secondly, if I just disconnect the injectors and remove the HT leads from the coil pack, will I run into any issues? I'm going to assume that the fuel pump etc will still function, so it should just run off the carbs and new ignition system?

I know this isn't the best way to go around things, but cheap/easiness is high on my list! I also know this doesn't seem to have been done on the Polo before, but I assume the principles pass from car to car?

Thanks, and sorry for the essay!

Joe
