I wonder if any potential GTi buyers are going to read about these problems before they go out and buy one. There's an absolute boat load of GTI's for sale on the VW website and in the Auto Trader, all done very little mileage and are going for a relatively cheap price

Well, you would have thought that people in the market for a GTI would be trawling these forums, the frustrating thing is that the problem doesn't seem to be consistent. I have been out this afternoon but no oil smoke was seen at all. I bet VW will say to me that the usage is normal

Is smoke out the back 'normal'? I think not.

Pulling away from junctions when power was suddenly needed would induce smoke from mine, not driving hard and fast in a straight line. Talk about embarrassing.....looked like a diesel.

Yes - that seems to be when it occurs John, pulling away from a standstill, but not always, even on very low revs (2000).

How much oil do you guys use up? Like the first batch that came out and the late 2011 ones?

I don't think VW did anything to the 1.4 TSI when it came out in the GTI. I got a brandnew MY12 and it's using about 0.5l every 2500 kilometres! So thats a freakin lot. Yeah it smokes, since it came out of the factory. Been to the dealer and they just laughed. Sir just near the entrance stands the oil you need. It's completely normal, it can use up 1l every 1000 kilometres and now f*ck off. That's how VW treat you in the Netherlands. So reading about changing pistons, rings or an entire block that VW come up with themselfs really blows my mind. If you want that to be done here you should threaten the personel with a firearm or so. :P

I don't think revision helps. It's just the poor way VW build it's engines. Wich GTI doesnt consume oil? Every does. One more than the other but always way more than ,,standard''

What's even more embarassing: The mechatronic of the DSG. Every GTI has it, when you drive on a bumpy road with your windows open you can hear that nice metal on metal sound . Like your having cans towed behind your car. VW says normal. Pleaseee!

Got GTI back. Apparently VW have fitted a complete new engine, with the revised block. Fingers crossed. Happy Christmas from Germany. :)

Skipster -Cheers. Haven't been far as of yet , feels fine so far, the next few days will let me know.
Was thinking, if it's a new engine then there must a new engine number and I'll have to register it with the DVLA. VW haven't said anything about this or given me any info.

No law saying you have to advise dvla of this.

Yes - rover220 is correct, it appears that there is no law on this, especially as the engine has been replaced with an identical unit. But - if you were to check with the DVLA, they will insist that the new engine number is provided. If it were me, I would be inclined to advise them, just incase it throws up some queries later on.

You may have to get supporting documentation from the dealer that did the work, it may be a bit of a pain but just thinking through, later on, if you were to sell it and somebody happened to see a mis-match between the V5 and the number stamped on the engine block, it could make things difficult. Certainly if the car had received a different spec engine entirely, then for sure that would be illegal and could nullify insurance unless the DVLA and insurer were notified.

Hi Vissa,

You don't seem entirely happy!

I was going to say, the 0.5l per 2500km (for us that is 1562 miles) sounds ok, especially if you have a MY12 and likely to be very low mileage. Mine was using 2.5l per 2500 miles (4000km) until the rings were replaced. It should not smoke though, even though I have had the rings done, I noticed a bit the other day, so I will inform the dealer of this when it goes in for its 1st annual service in 2 weeks time.

The 2nd statement about 1litre/1000km is rubbish, completely agree, that is far from normal, you would be forever putting oil in the thing if that is the case, your dealer is completely wrong in this situation.

We have had our troubles in the UK, but sounds like your dealer in the Netherlands is poor to say the least, can't you try another dealer as it sounds like you are experiencing some of the same issues we are?

Not sure about the mechatronic though, I have not heard this 'metal on metal' sound. :?

All best of luck anyway!

Cheers guys. Yes, I did a bit of checking online , think it's best to notify them with the relevant documentation. The V5 form does allow for a new engine number to be entered. Surprised that my dealer didn't mention this though.

Hiya
I work at a Main Dealers not VW But with HGV Trucks And when we fit new engines the customer never sends any details off for the replacement engine, We normally give them a form that comes with the engine that they can keep with their documentation should any problems arrise.

Well, so far so good with the new engine, at least I haven't seen any smoke coming out the back. The car feels faster, but then it would do I guess after spending 10 days in a Polo 1.2 basic...god I hated that car, all the joys of driving left me. :|

Good news John, yes - I found mine felt really quick after the courtesy car. Of course the whole thing will require bedding down all over again but fingers crossed all will be fine now. I guess it was just the block they replaced and not all the auxiliary components as well such as turbo, supercharger, water pump, alternator etc?

Mine will have its service on the 19th, will try and get the new dealer to measure the oil, but to be honest, I am not expecting them to raise an issue with it and will probably say its within normal tolerances.
