Good news John, yes - I found mine felt really quick after the courtesy car. Of course the whole thing will require bedding down all over again but fingers crossed all will be fine now. I guess it was just the block they replaced and not all the auxiliary components as well such as turbo, supercharger, water pump, alternator etc?

Mine will have its service on the 19th, will try and get the new dealer to measure the oil, but to be honest, I am not expecting them to raise an issue with it and will probably say its within normal tolerances.

What about the smoke out the back though? Will they put you on another 600 mile test I wonder.

Not sure, I only saw 2 small puffs of smoke (nothing since). I am hoping to use the service as a means for them to work out (approx) how much oil it has used, but the dipstick mark is still at the top of the hatchings.

Have just done my weekly oil check and yes, it has just moved south off the top of the hatching marks. Not seen any more smoke out the back and about 1,300 miles since the rings were replaced.

Service in a weeks time so I am still none the wiser really whether mine is fixed for good. :?

Doesn't sound too bad does it? Mine by that stage had used most of the oil and at around 1400, if I remember, the oil light came on. Fingers crossed or new engine for you.

No - it doesn't seem to be too bad John, your right, bearing in mind as well with the new rings those in themselves may cause slightly more oil to be used, and there is still not even 4,500 on the clock. I do so little mileage it takes a long while to see any changes really.

Yours all good?

Just throwing my name into this hat now as well. Was topped up 2 weeks after I'd had it (only around 700 miles down) and 600 miles later the oil light came on again. Took it into the dealers and they acknowledged the issue/tech bulletin and it's going back in next week to be sorted.

Just wondering what exactly should they be replacing under the VW guidance?

Hi adzmofo, yes, they will replace the piston rings. Sounds like your dealer has at least acknowledged the problem immediately rather than getting you to do a 1000km (625 miles) test first.

Was yours a brand new car recently? I am slighty surprised if it is as cars out the factory in the last 6 months or so 'should' in theory have had these fixes implemented.

That's an oil issue for sure. You would think that the new cars with the new engines would be ok. Piston ring upgrade first Adzmofo then if that doesn't work, and it didn't for me, it'll be a new engine, unless of course you demand a refund.
Mine (new engine under warranty) seems good so far, no oil drop and no smoke out of the rear. (Despite all the hassle, it's a cracking little GTI).
I enjoyed the support of VW customer services UK, who kept things moving with regular phone calls to all parties.

Thanks guys. Mine's a Dec 2010 car, so not new. It's done mid 4000 miles now and i'm the 2nd owner of the car. I'll let you know how i get on. It is a shame because like you said it's a great little car :)

Hi Adam, mine is also Dec 2010 and similar mileage (4,500). Hopefully the ring replacement will fix the issue as it appears to have done on mine. As John mentioned engine replacement is still a possibility but is clearly a last resort, and as far as I know, is still the exception rather than the rule.

Surprised the previous owner of your car did not get it sorted, perhaps they did not spot the problem?

All this aside so, they are great cars and this issue has not put me off it.

If i understand your question correctly?
I have a new engine fitted equivalent to a 61 plate with new bottom block and I'm reporting no problems so far.

Yer, how many miles so far? I have a 2011 gti and after 4000miles it had a new engine but still a 2011 spec one then at 8000miles it had new rings now its drinking oil again at 10000... so now ive been offered a brand new one which would be a 61 and just wondered if I would have the issues again!

Well there was something odd about the way she got rid of it so maybe (and i'm completely guessing here) she was having issues with the oil consumption and her dealer wasn't as open about the issues. Got a few litres of oil out of them in the mean time though and am checking it daily just in case.
