Are You Using Oil?
Re: Using Oil!
My engine was only replaced recently so I've only done a few hundred miles . I probably should have said advisedly no probs so far. The main improvement appears to be zero blue smoke emissions from the rear. This had been a problem with the previous engine before and after the ring upgrade. (I do know I now have the engine with the revised lower block). Oil still showing at max...hope it stays there longer than it used to.

Re: Using Oil!
Bought a 61 plate 6R GTI three weeks ago.. MY12 spec with white climatronic display etc - Manf date circa late Sep 11...Was conscious of the oil issue so for the first two weeks I regularly checked the oil levels which were at the mid point of the dip stick. Week 3 and up to 940 miles.. MFD displays "Check oil level!!" Sure enough I checked it, and there was barely any on the bottom of the plastic bobble, let alone the main stem of the stick. Interestingly letting the engine rest for a while after the initial shock
the MFD didn't display the warning on the next couple of ignition turns. Anyway 0.5L of Castrol 0w-40 edge sport (all I could find on a Sunday evening.. I have work early tomorrow) and the oil level is back to the middle part of the stem... Phew!! at least my engine wasn't bone dry. Never had a car from new so maybe not used to this engine bedding in / high oil use for the initial few thousand miles. Hope it is true what I have read on these forums and that VW have actively worked on sorting out this oil issue on the newer engines. Reading the blurb in the book it would appear at the moment at least to be within tolerance, will keep you posted.
On the plus side I installed an RNS 510 and vw bluetooth kit expecting to have to buy a VAGCOM unit or beg/borrow one, and the MFD displayed my phone and all the pretty icons / phone menu etc. Even the MFSW buttons worked straight off the bat with no coding from me. Maybe a sign of the future and later models will have bluetooth as standard. Think the MFD still needs programming for the satnav arrows to display (if it is capable of showing these??) but I can live without that for a little while at least.

Using Oil!
The oil light came on for me last night after 2400 miles. Now time to buy some oil, what shall I put in? 5w-30 or 5w-40?
Re: Using Oil!
Definitely 5W-30, I have been been using Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic http://www.castrol.com/castrol/productd ... Id=7027058stuart.cameron wrote:The oil light came on for me last night after 2400 miles. Now time to buy some oil, what shall I put in? 5w-30 or 5w-40?
It should state VW 504/507 spec on the bottle.

Re: Using Oil!
Good stuff, yes - I have had 2 litres of oil given to me FOC by the dealer (and a full tank of fuel). I have insisted on it due to the problems.stuart.cameron wrote:Quick phone to the dealer and got a litre free

Re: Using Oil!
520miles since ive had mine done oil level is almost off the hatched area
Re: Using Oil!
Not good. I don't know why VW continue with the farce of piston ring upgrades when in many cases it doesn't work.daydotz wrote:520miles since ive had mine done oil level is almost off the hatched area
Back to your dealership......you need a new engine with the revised lower block!
It has been suggested on various forums that VW were quietly thinking of pulling the TSI engine, as it was proving too expensive to produce and repair. Our German masters must be pulling their hair out with this one.

Re: Using Oil!
daydotz - how old is your car again? Mine is Dec '10. I seem to be in the minority where the piston ring upgrade appears to have worked. You have probably read my posts, I have done 1300 miles and the level is just off the top of the hatched area. It is in for service though on Monday, I am going to be asking them to see how much it has used.daydotz wrote:back to square one its one not really good enough anymoreJohnPolo wrote:Not good. Re: Using Oil!
mine i think was built the some time in feb 11
i think the fix depends on the dealer others seem to have done double the miles before the level has moved

Re: Using Oil!
Well I don't know guys, sorry to keep harking on about this but I saw another puff of smoke out the exhaust earlier and level is now down to about 80% of the way up the 'hatched' area.
Have only done a few miles this week, and saw smoke after booting it while dawdling in traffic. Maybe I have been burying my head in the sand convincing myself that mine was fixed but maybe it does require the revised engine block after all.
Mine has certainly gone a lot further but even after 1,300 miles, seeing the oil level drop and smoke can't be right.
Service on Monday, will be going through it with the dealer.

Re: Using Oil!
Yes best to get it checked Skipster. My new engine seems to be behaving itself, no smoke trails, oil level still ok, and rip-roaringly fast.
Re: Using Oil!
Yes - will do John, I am losing confidence now that mine is fixed. Think I mentioned a while back now that I would not be convinced until I reached about 2000 miles.JohnPolo wrote:Yes best to get it checked Skipster. Have you noticed a difference then with the way it drives (you mention rip-roaringly fast), maybe compression is slightly improved with the revised lower block.
Found out the other day that my car was built week 42 2010, (mid Oct'ish) so it is one of the very early models off the production line. I will report back Monday and let you know what they say.
Re: Using Oil!
Think mine was built week 36, 2010. There was never any hope for us then with such early cars!
Got challenged by a guy in his new Golf TDI..... he lost.
