pittstop

Post by polo_GT »

I have just purchased a g40 and was thinking about modifying the engine as it is completely standard at the moment. Pittstop offer several different tunning options at a resonable price, i was wondering what would be the best thing to do. Is there any point in getting an oil catch tank to keep the oil cool if i was to get a chip and pulley, size 68 to 70mm.

Think you misunderstand about the oil catch tank. It doesn't keep the oil cool - that an oil cooler and a good thing to have.

By having an oil catch tank, you are disconnecting the oil breather pipe that would normally recirculate into your inlet system, and lower your octane rating therefore reducing power, and re-routing the breather system from the breather pod on the back of the block into the catch tank, which catches the oil vapour, separates the oil from the vapour, that has to be emptied every so often. It also stops the blockaging that the mushroom valve is susepitible too which causing heavy breathing and oil spitting out of the dipstick due to that being its only escape option.

If your car is standard then I recommend you get your supercharger overhauled, and ported aswell if you want too.

Get a 65mm Pulley and chip. Or 65mm toothed belt pullies as PSD are doing them cheap at the moment.

Change your oil striaght away - then every few thousands miles. The air filter abit more frequently unless you get an induction kit. Use something like 10w40 magnetec or 15w50 oil. The VW stuff is really good.

Tuning options just depends on how much you want to spend. But a good start is the charger, chip and pulley and induction kit. You can keep the standard exhaust for upto around 150bhp but I would change it for a freer flowing 2 1/4" one to release the build up of back pressure.

You dont need to worry about head flowing and cam changes as its quite good as standard upto 170+bhp.

Good advice there. I'm sure pitstop will be happy to help you out if you get in contact with them.

The charger had already been rebuilt by previous owner. I have heard that by getting an induction kit or any foam filter can let dirt into the charger and mixed with oil can grind away at the inside of the charger.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!

And after all that... a yes. A FOAM induction kit (like pipercross) and a FOAM air filter is a very bad thing for your charger... but not a normal induction kit.

If you want air filter, get a K&N one as they are actually quite good if they've got the fresh air aswell. If you want an Induction Kit, get a Jabbasport one or the more expensive Pitstop one. And it also depends on what stage your charger is at, S2, S4 or R1 as to what inlet collar you use.

When was your charger rebuilt and what spec is it?

And also remember the one golden rule about a G40 - NEVER I repeat NEVER smack the rev limiter - It is a bad thing for the G charger!!! And the way it produces the power on Vee belts there is no need to!

I think hitting the limiter possibly causes the pinking effect. I tried searching to find where I read it, but with no luck. Nice new alloys by the way. 8)

I never rev the car past about 5.5 to 6. The charger was rebuilt about 9-10 thousand miles ago by jabbasport with a standard stage 2. I am going to get 68 mm pulley and chip from pittstop in the next couple of weeks and that is about it engine wise.

I think it's the sudden decrease in RPM that can damage the charger.
