Gear ratios on a 9n 1.2 12v (65)

hello ppl,
ive been happily driving my new Polo 9n 1.2 12v for 3 weeks now. (had the front bushes replaced last weekend too! )

the thing that i have noticed , i can sit at 30mph in 5th gear and it pulls!
are the ratios on a 1.2 shorter or sumthing?

what about ppl out there with 1.4s, 1.9s?

This Polo gearbox is pretty short in the firsts four gears and then a long 5th gear. It's only a maner of 5 seconds more or less to go from the 1st gear to the 5th.

I think this is to compensate the lack of power of the motor alied to the fact that this is a very rotative motor to.

Bottom line: Low mpg.

I do an average of 8.5+l/100km (that's a lot considering this is a 1.2 motor and I don't drive that fast all the time )

only filled it up once believe it or not. im doing at least 30mpg.

Averaged 37mpg on my last tankful, and I thrape the nuts off the thing everywhere (the needle enjoys being in that red bit ).

A lot of my mates I take out in it ask if it's a diesel - a few because of the 3-cyl chatter, but a lot of em because they comment on how well it pulls low down!

This was emphasised by the fact I was behind a Pug 106 GTI the other day, we both drop it to 3rd and boot it (he had a giant backbox, so you could tell when he was giving it some), he didn't leave me until I was approaching 4000rpm, but mind you, when he did leave me, he trully did leave me! Well, you've gotta try haven't ya!
