2002 Mk6 polo centre console air vent replacement?

Post by rich1988 »

Hi guys, as the title, the right hand side of the two centre air vents, (above the stereo and heater controls is broken), I understand they have to be replaced as a pair and have gotten a price from a breaker for £20 posted for the pair, my question is how hard is it to replace them? what piece of dash need to come off, is there a guide anywhere or can someone give me some advice?

thanks,

Rich

You need to remove the dash surround. Its pretty easy. You need to remove the stereo, then the cubby hole underneath. Then the heater dials surround and top tray. The cupholder needs removing, there are two tabs. one underneath and one on the side and then the blank plate on the drivers side. After this (it sounds alot but its simple once your doing it) there are 8 torx screws, 2 behind stereo, 1 behind the cupholder,1 behind the blank,2 behind the top tray and finally 2 next to the heater dials. it shold now start to come loose, push the hazard switch and any other switches u have through from behind and unplug. It should now be free once the tabs either side of the heater dials have been pushed in. Ive done this and its not bad at all. Takes minutes. Any probs let me know.

I would have thought you'd only need to remove the centre console. You can probably find a guide on google for this quite easily but the process basically is:
  • Remove radio, trim panel around heater controls, cup holder, card holder/blank, tray on top.
Remove 10 (?) Torx screws - in top area, behind cupholder, behind radio, and to the side of/underneath heater controls
Push out hazard/demister switches from behind and unplug
Unclip heater controls from centre console and remove

I had the same problem (except only one of my vents was missing on purchase) and replaced the whole thing myself in under 5 minutes. Pretty easy tbh as long as you have a torx set and removal tools.

cheers for the replies guys I didnt think it would be massively complicated, as far as the stereo goes its a standard fit item, do I need VW specific removal keys for it? (I have all torx bits etc)

I'm sure that you can get some VW specific ones if you want, but I use some generic autoleads ones that I got from Halfords and they've always seemed to do the job alright.
