VW have managed to send the dealer the wrong gearbox so am without my car for another weekend and stuck with a gutless Fox instead. Not impressed as have to do around 500 miles this weekend but it's the only cars they have available.

How many litres of oil are in the engine? checked mine today (61 plate with new bottom end, apparently) used half in 1600miles

I think it's only about 3.5 litres, but the dipstick is not linear, so the fact it is showing half, does not mean to say it has used 1.75 litres. I wold suggest yours has used about 1 litre, which is ok for a brand new model with only 1,600 miles. In comparison with yours (RHgti), mine has consumed about the same oil in 600 miles as yours has in 1600!
VW are convinced mine is fine, despite my complaints about smoke out the exhaust. The slight hesitation in the engine (I mentioned earlier in this thread) which is when the smoke is produced they said is probably an entirely different problem, like an engine management glitch, I am not buying into that.
I also think that the 2 dealerships I have been using are topping up the oil to different levels, when the piston rings were replaced before, I think we did about 700 miles before the level showed a drop, this time it was more like 350!
So there you are, clean bill of health for mine.
Still not sure whether to fight it further or just accept it!

My Polo Gti which has recently had the piston rings replaced due to high oil consumption so VW have asked my to keep a very close eye on how much I go through now, I'm sure many of you have been told the same thing but I'm noticed something quite strange.
When checking the dipstick my oil was full for a time and after a week or so I noticed it dropped down the dipstick as per usual... until I realised it could be the way I was checking the level. If I check my level at an oil temp of 60 degrees bearing in mind the water temp is 90 degrees the oil was just over half way down the dipstick but if I let my car get to the full operating temp of over 90 degrees, allowed 10 minutes for the oil to settle it was full again?
Not sure if anyone else has come across this? but thought I would share, seems the engine has fairly large discrepancies depending on the temp.
Can't say I've had a car that varies its level this much!

As for mine, well - mysteriously everything looks good again, fingers crossed. No smoke and no evidence of excessive oil burning. May it stay that way!

Mine had it's first service last week, it's now got 17000kms on the clock. In that time, aside from the full oil change I did, I have put in a total of 2L to replenish the oil level.
Another foorum member based in europe has alerted me to a part number change that occured on 10/01/2012 for the piston rings for these motors, which now see one of the rings an extra 0.1mm larger in diameter. This doesn't sound like much, but that is a considerable increase for a piston ring. On top of this, many a service centre here is just giving customers extra top-up oil and saying "just wait a couple of months, there is a proper fix coming, we know of the issues with your car, we will keep giving you oil, just hang on and it will be fixed..." which leads me to believe that the fix is codenamed CTHE....

Does that mean there will be a recall for any potentially affected cars? I would positively be ecstatic if thats the case, even if my car isnt currently using oil, i have only done 400 miles in it so far.

Thats good to know gavs....just got mine in December and at the moment seems everything is fine....2500km used 450ml. Well at least have a 2 year warranty on the engine so if something does start to pop up by that time should have the new fix so i just ride it normally until then.

Yes - very interesting, not sure if you have seen any of my recent posts but I was on a consumption test and within the 1000km (625 miles) I did see on several occasions clouds of blue smoke out of the back, coupled with a slight hesitation at that moment in the engine.

As far as they are concerned I have a perfectly healthy car. Admittedly since then I have not seen any more smoke out the back but then again I have not driven it that much.

Just another bit of info regarding the new rings, apparently the pistons too have changed, they used to just be stamped out, now, they look to be proper forged pistons too. This coincides with an observation of a growing number of stock-engined cars with no tunes etc displaying oil consumption issues which leads to new pistons and rings being fitted. The pistons in said affected engines, have been shown to have cracks in them...

Same here. Oil consumption issues and DSG are the reason my tuning is on hold. So im sorting brakes etc first.
