Odd noise - Possible gearbox? - Update

I've heard a very strange noise coming from my GTi recently, the best way to describe it is that when I was waiting in traffic (stationary) I thought the noise was coming from the the house next to me that was covered in scaffolding! It sounded like something hard being hit with a hammer

It's nothing something that happens every day, and as I say it has happened when stationary so I'm not sure it's gearbox related (well, I hope not anyway).

Bit of a long shot, but has anyone got any idea what's going on? Just had her running nicely as well!

May be a long shot but i had a similiar problem a few months back got worried it was my gearbox, before i went out and spent cash on a new box i toppednup the gearbox oil and the noise stopped. Try checking gearbox oil not

If its happening when stationary then chances are it wont be the gearbox, it sounds more engine related than transmission.

Could possibly be your exhaust hitting the underside of the car? Check the condition of the exhaust brackets and see if any need replacing/repairing

Update - The noise occurs when I switch the aircon off, it really is a horrendous noise, but hopeful it's something less important than the gearbox
